Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham were jeered off at full-time against Everton.
Tottenham Hotspur’s wait for a first win continues after a 0-0 draw against Everton.
Heading into Saturday’s home game, Spurs had yet to score in a Premier League fixture this campaign, and the goal drought has now continued. The hosts began brightly at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium but could not consistently trouble Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford thereafter.
Substitute Lucas Bergvall thought he had won the game in the 89th minute, only for Pickford to make a low save on his left to keep the scoreline 0-0. Tottenham’s wait for a goal was not aided by a toothless display in the final third against the Toffees as they mustered just two shots on target.
Roberto De Zerbi praises attitude of Tottenham players in 0-0 draw with Everton
The 0-0 scoreline meant it is the first time in Spurs’ history that they have failed to score in any of their first four league fixtures in a single campaign. While two points from a possible 12 in their first four games is not the start our fans would have wanted, particularly after a massive summer splurge on new recruits.
What is much more concerning to many is the fact that the Lilywhites are yet to find the back of the net in eight halves of football. Former scout Bryan King recently suggested that the North London club should have recruited an out-and-out No.9 to solve the goalscoring conundrum, and the problem has been compounded by Richarlison’s falling out with the club.
Amid another insipid attacking display, Roberto De Zerbi praised the attitude of his players. The Italian tactician urged the players to stay calm and work harder to understand where they can improve as individuals and as a unit.
“Today we played as a team. We didn’t score, we didn’t win, but today and Nottingham, I think we played as a team. And I can’t say nothing as an attitude, as a behaviour of the players, no, no,” De Zerbi said in his post-match press conference (h/t Football London)
“I said to stay calm, maybe not to lose confidence because we are not scoring, we are not winning. “Stay calm, improve, work hard and individually try to understand where the improvement is, no?”
De Zerbi under pressure at Tottenham
De Zerbi’s Tottenham were jeered off at full-time after a second successive goalless draw. Saturday’s stalemate at home to Everton followed the 0-0 at Nottingham Forest, and stretched the club’s barren run beyond 400 minutes.
The 47-year-old said his players played 30 minutes very well against Everton, then lost confidence and made many mistakes in the last third. The decision-making and end product has to massively improve, as these two fundamental factors largely contributed to Spurs picking up just two points from the last two games.
Fans are becoming frustrated with the team’s lack of cutting edge in the final third, and while the players must take up the responsibility for the underwhelming start to the season, De Zerbi isn’t exempt from blame. And after a massive squad rebuild, failure to get the Lilywhites to play an attractive brand of football and pick up positive results has put our gaffer under early pressure.
