‘No more do-overs’ for De Zerbi as pundit highlights where the ‘problem is’ for Tottenham this season

Tottenham are struggling to find form in the Premier League this season under Roberto De Zerbi’s guidance.

Time is already running out for Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham following a horrid start to the new Premier League season. The Lilywhites currently sit 17th in the league table after failing to score in any of their opening four matches this campaign. There have been glimpses of improvement in their performances, but the boos ringing around N17 in recent matches paint a different picture for the Italian tactician. As things stand, however, the club’s hierarchy continues to back De Zerbi as he looks to steady the ship at Hotspur Way.

Last weekend’s stalemate against Everton meant that the North Londoners remain winless in the Premier League this season. They are one of only two teams yet to find the back of the net this campaign, with newly-promoted side Coventry City being the other. Not many fans would have expected Spurs to start the campaign on such a dismal note, especially considering that the club spent almost £400m on ten new players during the summer transfer window.

None of the new signings have managed to hit the ground running for the Lilywhites this season. There is a lack of urgency in the final third, with the attackers seemingly making the wrong decisions after getting into promising goalscoring positions. It seems as though the players are still adapting to De Zerbi’s playing style as they continue to work hard to climb up the table in the coming weeks.

Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham side look out of ideas on the pitch

Patience is wearing thin, and the constant jeers from the crowd are not helping Roberto de Zerbi as he aims to get the club back to winning ways this season. The forbidden “R” word is doing the rounds once again at N17, with the Lilywhites sitting 17th in the league table after four matches. But there is still time for the Italian tactician to turn the tide around at Hotspur Way and help the club compete at the top end of the Premier League table in the coming weeks.

Mike Lahoud, however, has urged De Zerbi to sort out the attacking issues at N17 and help the players regain their confidence on the pitch in the coming weeks. Speaking on CBS Sports (via X), Lahoud said,

“I go back to what I say. I’m going to repeat myself until the results change. Roberto De Zerbi deserves his credit for the last campaign. But when you spend almost £330m, you get no more do-overs. You have to deliver results. And right now, he’s not getting the best out of one single player. The problem is in the attacking third.”

The pundit added,

“But I just see too many players not looking comfortable in their own skin. I think De Zerbi is trying to become too clever. Once you save a team from absolute despair, maybe that gives you a little confidence. But this is a Spurs team that looks completely devoid of any confidence.”

What is going wrong at Tottenham?

Not many expected Tottenham to splash the cash on new players this summer. The Lilywhites went above and beyond to complete a major squad overhaul and back Roberto de Zerbi in the transfer market. They spent almost £400m on ten new players, giving the Italian tactician everything he needed to build a team capable of competing at the top end of the Premier League table. However, it is fair to suggest that De Zerbi’s men have failed to step up in recent weeks after remaining winless in their opening four matches of the new campaign.

De Zerbi is already running out of options to get the best out of his players. The constant changes to the starting eleven prove that the Spurs boss is still figuring out his best team. The 47-year-old is known for his team’s attacking play, but that is exactly what is missing at N17 this season. So, the onus now falls on the Italian tactician to find the best combination on the pitch and help the Lilywhites go toe-to-toe with their rivals in the coming months.
