Tottenham are keen to beat Liverpool and advance into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.
Roberto De Zerbi oversaw the most expensive transfer window in Tottenham Hotspur’s history, landing several of his top targets. That now leaves the Italian boss with sufficient depth to manage and rotate his squad across domestic competitions, with no European adventure this season.
With a trip to Liverpool for the third round of the Carabao Cup up next, the Spurs head coach has hinted at rotating his squad on Tuesday evening. He is set to make changes to his squad after a quick turnaround from the Everton game in the Premier League.
Tottenham’s disappointing start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Everton. Roberto De Zerbi’s boys managed only two shots on target, with substitute Lucas Bergvall’s late effort the only time Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was really tested. The midfielders have found it difficult to provide service for the forwards to score goals, something De Zerbi is desperate to address.
Roberto De Zerbi reveals conversation with Tottenham squad in team meeting
Tottenham failing to disturb the scorers across 360 minutes of Premier League action has made headlines for all the wrong reasons. This is after massive summer spending, and De Zerbi is doing everything possible to help the team overcome the goalscoring drought.
Speaking to the club’s official media, the 47-year-old has now revealed what he told his players in a team meeting before the Liverpool encounter as he looks to address Tottenham’s goalscoring woes.
“Today in the meeting with the players we spoke about the last third of the pitch, and I said now I want to create individual clips for all players, for after dinner for the players to go home and work and improve as a joke,” De Zerbi said.
“But yes, if you analyse the first 30 minutes, there are many, many chances where just one different detail, just better passes, just better decisions and it would change the history of that game. But they are words. The fact is, improve on the pitch and not lose the quality of the first 30 minutes.”
When asked if he actually sent them home with homework, our gaffer added: “No, no, I brought the homework to the players.”
Spurs have to make their chances count on Tuesday as they will not get plenty of them against Liverpool at Anfield. The Reds are defensively solid, meaning our players will need to produce something special to carve them open.
De Zerbi is trying different combinations up front to get a solution to his side’s goalscoring conundrum, with the last game against Everton seeing Dominic Solanke start and lead the attack with Omar Marmoush playing off him. With rotation on the cards, fans will be intrigued to see what our attacking trio will be vs. Liverpool.
