Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham exited the Carabao Cup at the hands of Liverpool.
Tottenham Hotspur failed to break their 15-year Anfield jinx on Tuesday, suffering a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Carabao Cup third round.
Spurs were the better side on paper, creating more chances than the hosts on the evening. Roberto De Zerbi rightly pointed out that it was “unfair” to lose and exit the Carabao Cup. While it may be true, one cannot deny the fact that Liverpool were simply more clinical.
Spurs did manage to get a goal in this encounter despite their struggles for goals in the Premier League so far this season. Having fired blanks across six hours of league action, Conor Gallagher’s second-half header was the first goal the Lilywhites scored against a Premier League opposition this season.

Roberto De Zerbi claims Tottenham will score “many goals” this season after Carabao Cup exit
An early elimination from the Carabao Cup means Tottenham now have only two competitions to take care of. Roberto De Zerbi stated before the clash against Liverpool that he aimed to go deep in the Carabao Cup, but that ambition has now suffered an abrupt end in the third round.
Speaking after the game, De Zerbi was asked if his team are moving in the right direction to click as a team. On this, the Tottenham boss stated in his press conference (h/t Football London):
“I don’t know if the click is Saturday or not. But we have to find the … ‘la scintilla’. Because we have the qualities enough to score many goals with these players, forgetting the transfer market.”
Spurs gradually getting better
De Zerbi seems confident about Spurs becoming a force to be reckoned with once they click together. This is true after the arrival of 10 new faces and the exits of several players, so it is obvious that the summer signings are finding their feet at White Hart Lane and gelling with their teammates.
Since the Nottingham Forest game, the performances are getting better, and there is more cohesion and unity among the players. Tottenham created enough chances to beat Liverpool, end their 15-year-long Anfield curse and progress into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. The wastefulness in front of goal cost the Lilywhites dearly, with Andoni Iraola’s men extremely clinical with their chances.
De Zerbi and Co. host a lowly Aston Villa on Saturday, which is a great opportunity for our players to bounce back from the Liverpool defeat, show their personality and get their first win of the league campaign.
