Former Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld has openly admitted his long term ambition to become a sporting director after hanging up his boots.
Finding elite boardroom leadership remains an absolute necessity for the North Londoners as recruitment demands continue to evolve rapidly. Tottenham Hotspur is currently evaluating their executive setup behind the scenes. Former fan favorite Toby Alderweireld has now entered the wider conversation after discussing his post-playing career aspirations. The 37-year-old retired last year and already acts as a minor shareholder at Belgian outfit Royal Antwerp.

Marc Overmars’ sudden departure from Antwerp last week created an immediate vacancy at the Belgian side. Speaking on the Het Laatste Nieuws Voetbalpodcast, Alderweireld reflected on how modern clubs operate behind closed doors. Antwerp chief executive Sven Jaecques argued that existing systems can survive without a single figurehead. Alderweireld agreed partially, acknowledging that “the traditional sporting director who decides everything no longer exists” across modern European football.
Alderweireld Discusses The Art Of Modern Recruitment
The Belgian icon stressed that successful transfers still require recognisable football royalty to close negotiations. Alderweireld explained, “If Marc calls someone, or an unknown person calls someone, that makes a huge difference” in convincing top targets. He remembered his own transfer from Al Duhail in 2022 when Overmars texted, “Hey Toby, time to come home. I want to be champion.” That personal touch inspired him to captain his hometown side to silverware.
Former goalkeeper Frank Boeckx suggested that the legendary centre back could eventually step into those exact shoes. Alderweireld handled the suggestion with remarkable humility. He insisted, “Everything in its own time. I also don’t have the arrogance to say that I could simply replace Marc.”
Yet the former Lilywhites star refused to hide his genuine enthusiasm for the executive role. The decorated defender confirmed, “It is something I’d like to put my heart into one day. Let’s put it that way.” Gaining crucial front office experience at Antwerp could ultimately pave the way for an emotional return to North London.
