Lucas Bergvall penned a new contract with Tottenham after previously planning to leave the club.
Tottenham Hotspur are yet to win or score a goal in the Premier League after 360 minutes of action so far, with an expensively assembled squad yet to gel properly under Roberto De Zerbi.
After back-to-back league draws with Nottingham Forest and Everton, Spurs suffered an early elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Liverpool on Tuesday. This means Roberto De Zerbi and Co. have now got only two competitions to concentrate on.
Before the Liverpool game, Lucas Bergvall surprised the fans by signing a contract extension. The club announced the fresh deal but did not disclose details. The youngster’s previous contract was set to expire in 2031. The central midfielder wanted to leave the club for regular game time in the summer amid interest from Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United, but De Zerbi managed to convince him to stay and continue his development in N17.
Keith Wyness claims Lucas Bergvall’s valuation has boosted after signing new contract
Bergvall signing a new contract came as a bolt from the blue for the supporters. Spurs resisted the possibility of selling the Swedish international and managed to tie him down to a long-term contract last week.
However, former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness thinks the new contract for Bergvall makes perfect business sense for the North Londoners. He says Tottenham could now demand up to £80million for the youngster, thanks to the player agreeing to lucrative terms.
“It’s good from Spurs’ point of view, because look, he’s still a very young guy, and they’re going to have him now for probably seven years,” Keith Wyness said on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast (h/t Football Insider).
“So, the difference will be, if there is going to be a move, it’ll mean that Spurs will be getting somewhere up to £80m as opposed to £40m with a shorter-term contract.
“I think it just makes sense to tie him down, and they’ve obviously been able to reach an agreement.”
Wyness believes Bergvall has signed a two-year extension on top of his previous 2031 agreement with the club. De Zerbi has always admired the Swede’s talent and maintained that he sees him as a key part of his future plans in N17. And the player agreeing to a new deal reinforces his belief in the project at White Hart Lane and strengthens his relationship with the head coach.
However, if the Scandinavian prodigy doesn’t feature much this season and wishes to leave, Tottenham will be in a commanding position to demand a sizeable fee for his services.
