Tottenham could surprise everyone by taking a dip in the free-agent market to solve their goalscoring woes.
Tottenham Hotspur have won just once this season, against Championship side Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup. But in the third round of the competition, they were dumped out by Liverpool.
The 3-1 loss to Liverpool was the first time Roberto De Zerbi’s men had scored against Premier League opposition this season, after going all four of their Premier League games without finding the back of the net. Clearly, Spurs’ deficiencies in attack have been exposed at the start of the season, even though they spent big to reinforce their forward line in the summer.
For the first time in the history of our club, Spurs have gone goalless in the first four league games of a campaign. Omar Marmoush and Savio, marquee signings from Manchester City, have yet to spark into life and break Tottenham’s goalscoring duck. It appears that the N17 bosses are already looking for solutions ahead of the January window, and they have turned their attention to the free agency market.
Tottenham eye move for former Inter Milan star
According to Italian journalist Cronache Di Spogliatoio (h/t LaLazioSiamoNoi), Tottenham are interested in signing free agent Mauro Icardi. They are assessing his profile as a potential experienced option to try and solve their goalscoring woes.
Mauro Icardi is currently a free agent after leaving Galatasaray. The former Argentina international’s contract with the Turkish champions ran out at the end of the 2025/26 season. He was the club captain and scored 16 times for Galatasaray last season, and the 33-year-old is now awaiting an ambitious project to become a part of.
Lazio and Al Jazira are also linked with a move for Icardi, who has scored 250 goals in his club career. Spurs need a potent goalscorer, and a player of Icardi’s ilk fits the bill perfectly. However, this looks more like Tottenham being offered the chance to sign the player rather than the other way round.
The former Inter Milan star has been on the hunt for a new club for months, and his agents are working round the clock to help him find a destination. This has perhaps led to them offering their client to the Lilywhites, considering De Zerbi’s side are royally struggling for goals. While Icardi’s quality is undoubted, the center-forward comes with a lot of baggage.
The South American has off-field problems, his wage demands remain exorbitant, and injuries have become persistent in recent years. Plus, at 33, he is well past his prime and no longer the force he once was during his time with Inter Milan. So, regardless of the problems Spurs are facing when it comes to finding the back of the net, they must resist the temptation of snapping up Icardi.
