Atlético Madrid manager confirms mutual long-term interest paved the way for the center-back’s departure from North London.
Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has revealed that former Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian “Cuti” Romero was determined to join the La Liga club for two years prior to his transfer.
The Argentine international ended his spell in North London after serving as a key leader in Spurs’ defensive line. Opening up on the pursuit of the World Cup winner, Simeone confirmed that both the club and the player had been aligned on making the move happen for an extended period.
Addressing Romero’s eagerness to join the Spanish side, the manager’s comments were reported by Last Word On Spurs on X:
“We’ve been after him for two years. He’s also wanted to come here for two years.”
Simeone highlighted the significant effort required by the Atlético board to complete the marquee transfer, praising Romero’s instant commitment on the pitch.
Speaking on the club’s determination to finalize the deal, Simeone stated:
“The club made a huge effort to sign him and he gives us what we need, everything he’s got.”
The Atlético boss further commended the defender’s leadership traits, temperament, and central role in his plans moving forward. He continued:
“Hopefully he can keep that up, given his humility. He’s got a lot of character and presence, and we need him exactly as you see him. He came here to be a key figure for the club and the team.”
A New Chapter After Leaving North London
Romero’s exit represents a major shift for Tottenham Hotspur as Roberto De Zerbi adjusts his backline during the opening month of the 2026/27 campaign. Having established himself as a fan favorite and defensive anchor at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Romero’s transition to Madrid provides Simeone with a proven, elite-level organizer to lead Atlético’s defense in domestic and European competitions.
