Tottenham are hoping to go on a winning run in the Premier League under Roberto de Zerbi in the coming weeks.
Tottenham fans had high expectations from their side after the club splashed the cash on new signings during the summer transfer window. It is fair to say that the Lilywhites showed immense ambition in the market by backing Roberto De Zerbi and bringing in players who could make an instant impact at N17. The North Londoners outspent most clubs in the Premier League as the club underwent a major squad overhaul ahead of the ongoing campaign.
However, most of the new players have still not found their feet at N17 since arriving at Hotspur Way in the summer. The dismal start to the new Premier League season is further proof that Roberto De Zerbi still needs time to bring the best out of his players this time around. Under his guidance, the Lilywhites are winless in their opening four league matches, having scored a grand total of zero goals across those games.
It goes without saying that the Italian tactician is already facing immense scrutiny over his tactics. Despite all the money spent in the transfer window, Spurs are still finding it difficult to perform consistently and put together a winning run in the Premier League. The Lilywhites are currently hovering above the relegation zone, having secured just two points from their opening four matches. And it seems like time is already running out for De Zerbi to steady the ship at N17.
Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham side needs to start winning games
It almost felt like a desperate lunge by Tottenham in the summer as the club looked to leave their troubles behind during the ongoing campaign. The club spent an enormous amount of money to revamp the squad and kickstart a new era at N17 under Roberto de Zerbi. The expectation was that the Lilywhites would compete at the top end of the Premier League table almost immediately. However, it is fair to suggest that De Zerbi is still searching for the right balance within the squad as his side continue to struggle to produce positive results.
Chris Sutton has now criticised the Italian tactician for Spurs’ dismal start to the new campaign, claiming that the Lilywhites should not be hovering in the bottom half of the Premier League table after spending almost £400m on ten new players. Writing for the BBC, Sutton said,
“Tottenham boss Roberto de Zerbi has this reputation of being a great coach. We saw what a good job he did at Brighton, but we haven’t seen any improvement from Spurs yet, despite the big money they have spent. He is surely going to come under pressure soon, if their poor results continue. They are not the only ones to revamp their squad but, if you listen to De Zerbi, after about five years they might come good.”
The pundit added,
“He keeps saying they need time, but he’s had long enough for their results to be much better already. Other clubs, like Hull City and Ipswich Town, have brought plenty of players in and are doing well enough – so why aren’t Spurs? I think De Zerbi has to come under scrutiny.”
Sutton believes that Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs side have not shown any signs of improvement despite splashing the cash on quick fixes during the summer transfer window. The pundit claims that the Italian tactician’s team need to start picking up points to avoid further media scrutiny over their poor start to the new season. Sutton also adds that De Zerbi has had enough time to steady the ship at N17, pointing out that newly-promoted sides are showing more promise than the North Londoners in the Premier League this season.
There is no need to press the panic button at N17 over the club’s slow start to the season. Despite being winless in their opening four Premier League matches, De Zerbi’s men have gradually improved each week and are showing signs of promise in all areas of the pitch. The only thing missing is a winning run. And sooner or later, that will surely happen once the players fully adapt to the Italian tactician’s playing style.
