Lucas Bergvall has surprised many by signing a new contract at Tottenham.
Lucas Bergvall committed his future to Tottenham Hotspur by penning fresh terms last week. The announcement came as a surprise to many, as it was widely reported for the major part of the summer transfer window that the Spurs midfielder wanted to leave in search of regular game time.
Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United were two clubs interested in the Swedish international. In fact, both clubs also had bids rejected for Lucas Bergvall before the rumours were finally put to rest by head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who announced that the youngster will be staying at the club.
Bergvall, who was the club’s 2025 Player of the Season, has been in and out of Roberto De Zerbi’s XI this season. The 20-year-old has been a part of the Tottenham side that is yet to win a Premier League game, with the Lilywhites entering the extended international break following a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa.
Insider believes Lucas Bergvall’s new contract contains a release clause
Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness feels Bergvall likely has a release clause in the new deal he signed at the club recently. He thinks a possible release clause could create issues for the club to keep the player in the future.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily solved all the issues, but certainly it gives them a much stronger position in terms of negotiation over the price that they would ultimately let him go at,” Keith Wyness exclusively told Football Insider.
“Now there may have been a new release clause put in that contract, so it may well be a price in there that they’ve decided, which he would have agreed to.
“So that should make everything a little bit clearer and cleaner as well, should it come to it.”
Bergvall yet to earn Roberto De Zerbi’s trust
The 20-year-old received limited minutes under Roberto De Zerbi at the back end of last season. The Italian tactician preferred older and more experienced heads ahead of Bergvall and Archie Gray in the middle of the park, as Tottenham escaped relegation by a whisker.
That has continued into the new campaign, as the Swedish prodigy has started just once from Spurs’ five Premier League games to date. He was an unused substitute in the games against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, which has seen the midfielder amass just 78 league minutes across three appearances.
This is concerning for a player tipped to have a bright future. This shows that despite signing a new deal, De Zerbi isn’t seemingly fully convinced by Bergvall. It will bother Bergvall, who faces competition from Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield this season. If the Stockholm native’s situation doesn’t really change under De Zerbi in the coming months, a possibility of him asking to leave the club again might arise.
