Chris Hughton urges patience and expresses absolute confidence in Roberto De Zerbi despite Tottenham’s five-match winless start to the Premier League season.
As intense scrutiny surrounds Tottenham Hotspur following a winless five-game opening to the Premier League campaign, club legend Chris Hughton has stepped forward to offer vocal support for head coach Roberto De Zerbi. With Spurs sitting 20th in the table and battling a crisis of mental fragility and transition efficiency, Hughton believes the foundations for long-term success are firmly in place.
Speaking to Sky Sports, as shared by journalist Chris Cowlin on X, Hughton emphasized that integrating multiple summer additions into a demanding new tactical system naturally requires time, urging supporters and pundits to maintain perspective.
Acknowledging the heavy pressure on De Zerbi’s shoulders, Hughton noted:
“He’ll be feeling it more than anybody and he’ll be working with the team more than anybody. But I do know it’s difficult times when you’re not winning football matches and, of course, you’re managing at the level that he’s managing at. These are tough times and they’re difficult times.”
Quality Summer Recruitment and Tactical Patience
Despite Tottenham’s current league position, Hughton remains adamant that the squad possesses the technical quality required to reverse their fortunes. Highlights like Sávio leading the division in successful dribbles and key passes underscore the individual talent brought into North London over the transfer window.
“But he’s a top manager. I think what he also has is a good group of players. If I look at the purchases this summer, the club have brought in good players. When you have a combination of a very good coach who wants to work with these players and good players, then it gives you more confidence that things will improve,” Hughton explained.
“It can go either way. Sometimes things can go well from the start when you’re bringing in a lot of players at the same time. Sometimes it takes time. It’s obviously going to take that little bit of time. We have to accept and remember that we are five games into a season.”
Hughton, who understands the pressure of high-level management intimately, acknowledged that noise and external criticism are inevitable during a five-match winless streak. However, he expressed complete belief that De Zerbi will steer Tottenham back toward the top half of the table.
“If there is criticism, then it’s something that you have to accept as a coach and, of course, want to turn that around and turn the results from maybe not such good results into good results. I have absolute confidence that he will. I’m very, very confident that there will be a turnaround. Of course, everybody wants it sooner rather than later, and sometimes that’s not the case. But ultimately, I think we will be seeing a winning football team here.”
With non-international players utilizing a planned week off and forward Mohammed Kudus staying in London to reach peak physical conditioning, De Zerbi will be desperate to validate Hughton’s trust when Tottenham travel to face Manchester United on October 10th.
