Tottenham among clubs chasing Bayern Munich’s 29-year-old centre-back who has made 121 appearances for the club

Tottenham are planning defensive reinforcements in the January transfer window.

During the summer, Tottenham Hotspur oversaw as comprehensive a rebuild as we have seen any side do in a single transfer window, with 10 new players arriving through the door and even more exiting.

One of the few positions they strengthened was the defensive unit, with the likes of Andy Robertson, Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Tosin Adarabioyo becoming a part of Roberto De Zerbi’s roster. However, the defence continues to leak goals. Spurs have conceded eight goals in five Premier League matches, with three of those coming in the weekend’s home loss to Aston Villa.

Van Hecke came under severe criticism after the Aston Villa game, while Micky van de Ven hasn’t shown his best form yet this season. As a result, Tottenham are turning their attention to an experienced defender ahead of the January window.

Tottenham chasing Bayern Munich defender

According to a report from German outlet Fussball News, Tottenham are among several clubs chasing Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-jae ahead of the January transfer window. Aston Villa, AC Milan and Juventus are all in the race to sign the South Korean star.

Despite not being a regular starter for Bayern Munich, Kim Min-jae somewhat surprisingly stayed at Bayern Munich beyond the summer. A decision on his future could come in December, with Bayern’s management planning a meeting with the player and his entourage to discuss his role and long-term prospects. If he is made available for transfer, talks would likely begin at €25-30 million.

The South Korean international has made 121 appearances for Bayern in just over three seasons in Germany, winning the Bundesliga title twice in that time, as well as the German Cup. The 29-year-old has played 399 minutes across five games for the Bavarian giants so far this season.

Kim Min-jae might be the leader Tottenham requires in defence

The defence, despite all the good work it did to keep clean sheets against Nottingham Forest and Everton, was brutally exposed by Villa. The players are struggling to follow simple instructions, and there is no real communication at the back, causing the Lilywhites a lot of problems against high-pressing and potent attackers.

A new centre-back could compete for a starting XI spot and keep the players on their toes as well. Kim, in that regard, would be a good fit in N17. A leader, strong communicator, good organiser and winner, the Bayern man would bring much-needed experience and tactical know-how at the back for Spurs. The South Korean star’s ability to play in a high defensive line should bode well for De Zerbi’s system.

If he is allowed to leave Bayern for €25-30 million in January, Tottenham must be all over Kim’s signing.
