Tottenham are hoping to add more firepower in the final third under Roberto de Zerbi this season.
Tottenham’s dismal start to the new season means that Roberto de Zerbi is already facing pressure at N17. The Lilywhites have gone five consecutive league games without a victory, leaving the club at the bottom of the table as we approach the first international break of the campaign. To make matters worse, the North Londoners have also crashed out of the Carabao Cup this season following a 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield earlier last week.
There are plenty of glaring issues within the squad that need to be addressed by the club in the coming months. But none are as concerning as Spurs’ misfiring attack in the Premier League this season. Saturday’s 2-3 defeat to Aston Villa was the first time in five matches that the Lilywhites found the back of the net in the league this campaign. However, both goals were nothing more than consolations for the North Londoners.
Despite splashing the cash to reinforce the attack at N17 this summer, there are still several issues in the final third that Roberto de Zerbi needs to address in the coming weeks. New signings Omar Marmoush and Savio have not yet opened their accounts for the Lilywhites despite arriving from Manchester City for significant fees. On the other hand, prolific striker Dominic Solanke has also failed to step up for his side, remaining goalless in the opening five matches of the season.
Tottenham are not keen on signing free agent Mauro Icardi
The lack of goals at N17 has become a major concern for Tottenham boss Roberto de Zerbi. The Lilywhites are among the lowest-scoring teams in the top flight after failing to find the back of the net in their opening four league matches of the season. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the North Londoners have been heavily linked with a move for free agent Mauro Icardi in recent days. The Argentine international was reportedly assessed by the club as a potential solution to address the team’s goal-scoring woes.
Icardi recently left Galatasaray after his contract with the Turkish giants expired in the summer. In his final season with the club, the Argentine international managed to score 16 goals for Galatasaray, providing a reliable option alongside star striker Victor Osimhen. With more than 250 career goals, including 11 in the Champions League, the 33-year-old is waiting for an ambitious project to become a part of in the coming weeks.
However, it seems that Spurs are opting against signing the prolific striker in the coming days. As per Football Insider, the Lilywhites cannot register a new player in the Premier League until January after submitting their final squad list earlier this month. That has put the North Londoners off signing Mauro Icardi, who is not being viewed as a “viable option” for the club at the moment. As a result, the Argentine international is more likely to move to Serie A as Spurs look for other alternatives.
In all honesty, Spurs have enough attacking firepower to go on a goal-scoring run in the Premier League in the coming weeks. Having different profiles such as Omar Marmoush, Savio, Mohammed Kudus, James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, and Mathys Tel gives Roberto de Zerbi enough combinations to try and make the attack click at N17 this season. The onus now falls on the Italian tactician to get the best out of his players in the final third, starting with the clash against Manchester United after the international break.
