Tottenham could dip in the January transfer market after Pedro Porro’s latest injury.
Tottenham Hotspur did something the supporters have not been used to in the summer transfer window: they backed a head coach with huge outlay to elevate the quality of the playing squad.
They made sweeping changes to a squad that narrowly avoided relegation last term, spending more than £300million to bring in ten new signings, with players in double digits departing north London too. However, Spurs have endured a disastrous start to the 2026/27 season, failing to win a Premier League game so far and already out of the Carabao Cup.
Following the 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday, coupled with Fulham’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United, Roberto De Zerbi’s side entered the international break rock-bottom in the table. Also, Tottenham suffered a big blow during the Villa game when Pedro Porro was forced off with a seemingly hamstring injury. It remains to be seen how long Porro will be out after the Spaniard withdrew from the national team squad for the upcoming games.
Tottenham among clubs keeping tabs on Real Sociedad star
Spurs failed to sign sufficient cover for Porro during the summer transfer window after Djed Spence was sold to Inter Milan. Archie Gray has been deployed as the 27-year-old’s understudy at right-back, but the Tottenham bosses are turning their attention to a La Liga talent ahead of the January window.
According to an exclusive report from TEAMtalk, Tottenham are one of a host of clubs to have checked on Real Sociedad full-back Jon Aramburu. Manchester City and Liverpool have scouted the player, who is also being monitored by Everton, Fulham and Newcastle United.
Jon Aramburu’s reputation in La Liga has grown in recent years thanks to his consistent performances for Real Sociedad. He has now established himself as a key player for Real Sociedad, racking up over 100 appearances in all competitions.
The Venezuelan international has been particularly impressive in 1v1 situations, while also making an impact going forward. Plus, the 24-year-old’s ability to play on the left as well as the right makes him an attractive proposition for clubs across Europe. The report adds Aramburu’s contract, which runs until 2030, has a release clause of around £50 million.
Spurs must make a move for Aramburu in January
Many expected Tottenham to bring in a new right-back following Spence’s departure. Yet, the Hotspur Way chiefs appeared to undervalue the importance of replacing the England international, opting instead to rely on the existing options. As a result, De Zerbi is paying the consequences of that poor decision.
Aramburu could be Spence’s ideal long-term replacement. The Venezuelan talent has pace, power, strength, game awareness and positional discipline, and he’d be someone to keep Porro on his toes. The Lilywhites should do everything possible to secure his signature in the winter transfer window. Missing out on a player of the Real Sociedad man’s quality could prove costly, especially given their need for greater quality and depth at right-back.
