Spurs analyst John Wenham hits back at Jason Cundy and Jamie O’Hara over their Tottenham relegation claims as he backs Roberto De Zerbi to turn things around.
Spurs analyst John Wenham has launched a scathing critique of talkSPORT hosts Jason Cundy and Jamie O’Hara, accusing the pair of using Tottenham Hotspur for cheap laughs following their claims that Roberto De Zerbi’s team is entangled in a genuine Premier League relegation battle.
Tottenham currently sit bottom of the Premier League table after failing to win any of their opening five matches, recording two draws and three losses despite committing over £314 million to summer squad recruitment. While the winless start has invited intense media scrutiny, Wenham, who runs the popular Lilywhite Rose account, insists that Cundy and O’Hara are merely manufacturing outrage to drive engagement rather than delivering meaningful football analysis.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham dismissed the duo’s broadcast commentary as superficial:
“Jason Cundy and Jamie O’Hara, they do their thing well, you know, their sort of pub jokes, they get the cheap laughs. There’s not much intellectual quality in their analysis, you know, it’s just wearing wigs and catchphrases. Not to put down other people, but for me, it’s kind of lowest common denominator stuff that comes from those two, without much intellect of what actually goes on in a football game.”
International Break as a Critical Tactical Reset
Despite the noise surrounding North London, Wenham maintains complete faith that Tottenham will turn their season around and firmly rejects any talk of relegation. He emphasized that the three-week international break has arrived at an ideal moment, affording De Zerbi valuable, uninterrupted training ground time with several high-profile senior players.
“I think that this international break has come at a fantastic time for us,” Wenham explained. “Yes, we’re bottom of the table and that means there’s three weeks’ worth of the likes of Cundy, O’Hara, Agbonlahor, and others making quick gags, but the reality is maybe we need this reset.”
“We’ll have quite a few players at the training ground, the likes of James Maddison, Conor Gallagher, Dominic Solanke, Antonin Kinsky, and Tosin Adarabioyo, there’s quite a few players that the manager’s going to have a real opportunity to work with now over the next couple of weeks.”
With Tottenham having scored just two goals across their opening five league fixtures, the pressure on De Zerbi to produce immediate results remains significant. Looking ahead to a high-stakes trip to Old Trafford against Manchester United followed by a Monday night home fixture against Coventry City, Wenham highlighted that the squad must target a six-point haul to kickstart their campaign.
“We’ve got Man United away and we’ve got Coventry at home on the Monday night, which is an enormous game,” Wenham noted. “We need to be in a position to pick up six points from those two games and really start our season.”
Ultimately, Tottenham’s upcoming double-header represents a pivotal turning point for De Zerbi’s tenure. Securing back-to-back victories will be essential not only to lift Spurs out of the bottom three, but also to silence external critics and restore belief across North London.
