‘Is that what you want to hear?’ – Lucas Bergvall hints at a release clause but won’t confirm it

Lucas Bergvall committed his future to Tottenham by signing a new deal.

Tottenham Hotspur performed major squad surgery in the summer, signing as many as 10 players. Several players left the club as well, either on loan or permanently.

The big-money signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes put the futures of a couple of midfielders in limbo. Pape Matar Sarr left the club on loan to Juventus on deadline day. Lucas Bergvall had also internally expressed his desire to depart Spurs for greener pastures amid interest from some Premier League clubs.

Tottenham were unwilling to sanction the Swede’s exit. The central midfielder ultimately remained at the club after they convinced him to continue his development in north London by outlining a clear pathway for his future. And earlier this month, Lucas Bergvall ended doubts over his long-term future in N17 by penning a contract extension.

Lucas Bergvall remains coy over new contract details

Bergvall has been named in the Sweden squad for the UEFA Nations League games over the extended international break. From Sweden’s training camp, the central midfielder was asked about a release clause in his new contract. To which he told the Swedish media outlet Fotbollskanalen:

“Is that what you want to hear? That’s not something I’m going to say.

“I don’t know if I should go into exactly what’s in the contract, as it’s quite personal, but I’m incredibly happy to have signed a new deal and feel positive about the process.”

Bergvall already had a contract running until 2031, so the new agreement perhaps provides him with a salary hike. The pay rise, coupled with the club’s determination to convince him to stay, highlights how highly the North London outfit rates the Scandinavian talent. He has clocked 258 minutes across five Premier League appearances thus far, with De Zerbi’s side enduring a torrid start to the campaign.

There is no doubt that Bergvall is a phenomenal talent with a bright future, and it remains to be seen whether he can establish himself as a key player under the Italian manager. For now, he’s signed a new deal, seems happy to continue his development and unlock his true potential under De Zerbi. He has also responded to summer transfer speculation that clouded his future in N17.

Whether or not he has a release clause in his new contract remains to be seen.
