Lucas Bergvall was looking to leave Tottenham after two seasons due to concerns about regular opportunities.
Lucas Bergvall was linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur during the summer transfer window. He had considered a fresh challenge amid concerns over his playing time under Roberto De Zerbi.
Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United explored potential moves, but Spurs were unwilling to entertain his departure. Chelsea also made a deadline day enquiry to the Lilywhites over the youngster. The central midfielder eventually ended up staying at the club, and Roberto De Zerbi had expressed his happiness over his decision at the start of the month. He also added then that the Swedish international has massive potential and could be a big player for Tottenham.
Lucas Bergvall recently committed his future to the north London club, signing an extension to his contract that tied him down to 2031. The fresh agreement also provides him with a salary increase.
Lucas Bergvall opens up on Tottenham summer transfer speculation
After being handed minutes at the start of the 2026/27 season by De Zerbi, Bergvall decided to extend his stay at White Hart Lane. The 20-year-old has now shed some light on the behind-the-scenes conversations which led to his new deal, insisting he did not attempt to force a move away from Tottenham.
“Last year was tough, and that was reflected quite a bit in how things went,” Bergvall said in an interview with Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen.
“But I’ve always had a good dialogue with the club. Incredibly happy to have signed a new contract. There was a lot of speculation this summer.
“I let time do the talking. I didn’t try to force anything, just tried to be happy. I’ve always had a good dialogue with the club.”
Bergvall remains an integral part of De Zerbi’s squad
De Zerbi managed to convince Bergvall to stay and continue his development at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The Swedish prodigy has made 83 appearances in all competitions for the Lilywhites, netting two goals and registering nine assists.
The 20-year-old has not enjoyed a strong start to the season just like the rest of his Spurs teammates. After being hauled off in the 45th minute of Tottenham’s season opener at Brentford, Bergvall remained an unused substitute in the next two Premier League games. He has been handed minutes off the bench against Everton and Aston Villa.
Nonetheless, the former Djurgarden talent remains an integral part of De Zerbi’s squad and will get minutes as the season progresses. The significant pay rise with his new deal, coupled with the North London outfit’s resolve to convince him to stay, underlines how highly the Hotspur Way chiefs and De Zerbi regard Bergvall and their belief that he can fulfil his potential here.
