Tottenham-linked Benfica winger from Norway signs with new agency Gestifute

Tottenham target switches agency before heading off to international duty.

Despite spending well over £300m during the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have not produced the desired performances and results on the pitch this season, remaining without a Premier League win after five matches.

It has raised questions over the club’s transfer business and whether any of the 10 players signed have actually helped the Lilywhites overcome the fundamental problems that ravaged them last season. Roberto De Zerbi’s had not even scored a Premier League goal until Saturday’s home defeat to Aston Villa, although the brand of football this season has been pleasing to the eye.

In terms of attackers, the club bosses brought in Savio, Omar Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk. None of those has yet to make any goal contribution, which has been frustrating for De Zerbi. Before going for Mudryk on deadline day, one player who was targeted by Spurs was Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup.

Benfica star Andreas Schjelderup switches agency

Andreas Schjelderup scored 10 and assisted seven times across all competitions for Benfica last season, and that form saw him land a World Cup spot with Norway. The tricky winger also had a memorable World Cup, where his Norway team were beaten by England in the quarter-finals.

Impressed with his World Cup performances, Spurs wanted to sign the 23-year-old. However, Benfica had no interest whatsoever in parting ways with their star attacker. Instead, the Portuguese giants have been trying to extend his deal, which expires in 2028. So far, nothing has materialised.

Now, according to Portuguese newspaper Record, Schjelderup has changed agents and signed with Gestifute, the company led by Jorge Mendes. The Benfica star has entered into an association with Jorge Mendes, before heading to team up with Norway for the international break games.

The player’s long-term future at Estadio da Luz remains unresolved. In June, Benfica tabled a proposal to renew his deal through to 2031, but Schjelderup has yet to send a response. And now Mendes’ entry into the picture adds a new layer of intrigue.

A bumper new contract or transfer away from Benfica- what Schjelderup wants?

These kinds of agency changes generally signal that the player is trying to position himself to get a transfer away from his current club or look out for a bumper new deal. Concerning Schjelderup, it cannot be stated with complete authority towards which direction he is heading.

Mendes, known as the super-agent in world football, has connections that can earn his brand-new client a possible move to the Premier League or any other top European league.

Tottenham’s current position on the player is also unclear. Whether the Lilywhites are planning to revive their interest in Schjelderup remains to be seen. At 23, the Norwegian could be tempted to move to the Premier League and become a part of De Zerbi’s side in North London, even if the exciting project hasn’t kicked off as he would have liked.
