Tottenham are planning to invest in a striker in January.
Tottenham Hotspur were one of the busiest clubs across Europe in the summer window, spending above £300m to bring 10 new signings through the door. However, it has become apparent in the opening five weeks of the campaign that despite their extensive rebuild, the squad still has some gaping holes.
The biggest talking point at White Hart Lane right now is how ordinary Roberto De Zerbi’s side have looked in the final third. The likes of Savio and Omar Marmoush, summer signings from Manchester City, were expected to elevate the quality of the squad and add much-needed cutting edge to Tottenham’s attack. However, that has not been the case so far, with the North Londoners scoring just two goals in their opening five league matches.
As per reputed journalist David Ornstein, Spurs will look to bring in a new striker as Richarlison’s long-term replacement when the transfer window reopens. De Zerbi freezing out Richarlison from the 25-man Premier League squad, coupled with Dominic Solanke’s fitness struggles and lack of form, has made the signing of a new striker a priority in January.
Sunderland could find it difficult to reject big offer for Brian Brobbey amid Tottenham interest
Spurs have been urged to splash the cash for Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey in the winter transfer window. This comes in the wake of the Dutchman bagging a hat-trick, albeit in Sunderland’s 5-3 defeat to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium last weekend.
Since arriving at Sunderland from Ajax last summer, Brobbey has established himself as a crucial part of Regis Le Bris’ starting XI. He managed only seven goals last season, but it was his physicality, pace, directness and link-up play that caught the most attention within the Premier League.
Despite the Netherlands striker’s prominent role in Le Bris’ plans for the future, former scout Mick Brown thinks Sunderland will find it difficult to turn down a big offer for the player in 2027.
“These types of deals are always difficult for a club like Sunderland,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“Obviously, in an ideal world, they don’t want to lose Brobbey because he’s done an excellent job for them and he is a big part of everything they’re trying to build there. But say a huge offer comes in tomorrow from Tottenham or somebody like that, I think they would struggle to turn that down.
“For clubs in Sunderland’s position, the decision is about whether you think you can bring in a replacement with the money you make, or if this player is irreplaceable. For the right fee, nobody is irreplaceable, and every player has a price because at a certain stage the offer could be worth more than their valuation of the player.
“Then, they’d have to use that money and go out and sign a replacement, who they’d be taking a risk on, whether he can be as good at Brobbey.
“So, it’s a tricky situation for Sunderland to be in if these big offers start coming in. Either way, I wouldn’t expect it to happen in January, so for now there are no immediate worries.”
Tottenham must test Sunderland’s resolve for Brobbey
Brobbey has been trying to rebuild his reputation with Sunderland, and so far, he has been successful. The ex-Ajax star demonstrated his ruthless finishing skills with a hat-trick against Man City, and with more quality players and better coaching, he can finally fulfil his vast potential.
A player of the 24-year-old’s quality could make a difference for Tottenham. De Zerbi’s side are seriously lacking in attacking depth, with Solanke currently the only senior out-and-out striker in the squad. Brobbey would not only provide much-needed physicality and a focal point to our attack, but also challenge Solanke for a spot in the first XI.
All in all, the Tottenham bosses must not hesitate to test Sunderland’s resolve for the diminutive Dutchman in January.
