Lucas Bergvall gives instant response to Andy Robertson Tottenham verdict

Lucas Bergvall has opened up on Tottenham’s underwhelming start to the season.

Andy Robertson was the first signing of the summer transfer window and of the Roberto De Zerbi revolution at Tottenham Hotspur, kicking off an extremely busy summer window, which saw 10 fresh faces arrive through the doors at Hotspur Way.

The Scotland international was initially expected to join the Lilywhites in the winter transfer window, but the deal did not materialise. Eventually, he decided to make the move to N17 after his contract with Liverpool expired at the end of the season. Andy Robertson has quickly become a regular fixture in Roberto De Zerbi’s XI, although he is yet to taste a Premier League win with his new club.

With just two points on board from five games, Tottenham are sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Andy Robertson shed light on Tottenham’s worst start to the season

During an appearance on The Overlap’s Stick to Football, Andy Robertson said that he feels like the Tottenham players and fans have lost their confidence after the club’s struggles in recent seasons.

“That’s the message of the manager, first and foremost and also that kind of falls on me, the new players, of we need to forget,” Robertson said.

“We need to now try and get Tottenham back to where we believe they belong. And the fans are still carrying it as well, and you don’t blame them. They’ve been through such a tough time and things like that.”

Lucas Bergvall gives instant response to Andy Robertson’s Tottenham admission

Despite a massive summer squad overhaul exceeding £300 million in recruitment expenses, three league losses in five games and defensive collapses have left the group lacking self-belief. Robertson feels there have been moments in recent games when Spurs have conceded goals and their heads have quickly dropped.

Lucas Bergvall was asked about Robertson’s admission on Tottenham’s struggles while on international duty with Sweden. To which the central midfielder told Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen:

“It’s hard for me to say how we’ve been affected by previous years. But it’s a process. We have a lot of new players and a fairly new coach, who was part of saving us last year.

“We’re trying to build something big, and it takes time. But if he (Robertson) has that opinion, he has that opinion; I’m not saying it’s wrong or right.

“It’s been a tough start for us, but we’re just looking ahead. Of course, it’s tough. At the same time, it’s part of football. It feels like we’re playing better and taking steps every day in training. It’s just looking ahead and keeping going. Then we’ll get some kind of reward.”

Robertson’s remarks closely align with recent statements made by De Zerbi, who bluntly pointed to a lack of resilience, fight and a fragile mentality following recent displays and defeats. When falling behind in games, Spurs have frequently shown a tendency to lose tactical shape and discipline. The energy and confidence levels within the players have been sapped, a characteristic that pundits have highlighted since the start of the season.

This is where experienced heads and leaders like Robertson have to step up and be counted. They have to lead by example and manage moments of adversity for young talents like Bergvall to follow and learn.
