Tottenham are keen on adding some much-needed depth in the middle of the park during the winter transfer window.
Tottenham did well to undergo a major squad overhaul during the summer transfer window. It is believed that Roberto De Zerbi had a huge say in the players brought in by the Lilywhites, with the Italian tactician wanting profiles who could instantly hit the ground running at N17 and quickly adapt to the 47-year-old’s playing style this season. As a result, the North Londoners showed plenty of intent in the market while luring some high-profile names to Hotspur Way.
Spurs focused on bolstering all areas of the pitch before the start of the season. As a result, the Lilywhites saw Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes arrive at N17 to strengthen the midfield and give De Zerbi some much-needed depth in the middle of the park. Both players arrived at Hotspur Way for a combined £185m, with the North Londoners breaching the £100m mark for Tonali during the early stages of the transfer window.
After opting against signing Joao Palhinha on a permanent deal and loaning out Pape Matar Sarr to Juventus this summer, the Lilywhites were keen to add more depth in the middle of the park during the latter stages of the transfer window. That is exactly why the North Londoners made a late move for Bournemouth star Alex Scott just before deadline day. However, the Cherries rejected the transfer proposal almost instantly, stating that they had no intention of parting ways with the England international without a replacement.
Tottenham are not the only ones wanting Bournemouth’s Alex Scott
Tottenham’s slow start to the new Premier League season has revealed some major flaws in Roberto de Zerbi’s system at N17. Despite splashing the cash on new signings this summer, the Lilywhites are struggling to control the tempo of games this season. The midfield is being overrun, and there are huge gaps in the middle of the park as De Zerbi tries to find the right combination in recent weeks. Both Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have endured slow starts to their Spurs careers as well, placing tremendous pressure on De Zerbi to get the best out of them.
So, it comes as no surprise that the North Londoners are keen on adding more firepower to the midfield department. Recent reports suggest that Spurs have reignited their interest in Bournemouth’s Alex Scott after missing out on the player during the latter stages of the transfer window. The Lilywhites are said to be monitoring his skill and composure following the talented midfielder’s exceptional start to the new season. However, it is believed that the Cherries are not willing to lose their star player in January, subsequently placing a €90m price tag on his services.
There is a new twist in the transfer saga involving the talented midfielder. As per Caught Offside, Spurs might need to fend off competition from local rivals Chelsea if they are to land Alex Scott in the coming months. The Blues have made the England international a priority target and believe he would thrive in Xabi Alonso’s system. Not only that, but the 23-year-old is also receptive to the idea of moving to Stamford Bridge if the right opportunity comes his way.
Alex Scott has been one of the standout performers in the Premier League this season. Continuing his fine form from last year, the 23-year-old has performed consistently week in, week out for Bournemouth. As per Opta (via X), the talented midfielder ranks in the top three among Premier League players for high turnovers (11), fouls won (17), ground duels won (30), take-ons with fouls won (4), possession won (36), and off-ball support runs (44). He is an all-action midfielder who could instantly bolster the Spurs midfield if he does end up at N17 in the coming months.
