Blow for Tottenham as Spurs-linked Serie A defender agrees new contract with Atalanta

Tottenham were interested in signing Serie A defender during the summer transfer window.

Tottenham Hotspur were quite successful in backing Roberto De Zerbi during the summer by bringing in ten new players as part of a major squad overhaul. Among all the high-profile incomings, the club’s main priority was to fortify the defensive unit.

Spurs did well to ensure that their defence was ready to nullify the opposition attackers and bag clean sheets during the new campaign. As a result, they ended up bringing in Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Jan Paul van Hecke. The North London club acted swiftly to replace Kevin Danso with Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea on deadline day.

Before the arrivals of Senesi and Van Hecke, Tottenham were linked with a move for Atalanta star Giorgio Scalvini. In fact, Spurs had enquired with the defender’s entourage to understand ‘the potential for negotiations’ with the player himself. However, Atalanta were reluctant to part ways with their defensive wall, and he eventually stayed at the club.

Tottenham-linked Giorgio Scalvini agrees new Atalanta contract

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Scalvini has agreed to a new long-term contract with Atalanta, but the central defender’s renewal is unlikely to scare off potential suitors from the Premier League. He has now reached an agreement on fresh terms with the Bergamo-based outfit, with the new contract set to keep him at the club until 2031.

Long regarded as one of Europe’s most promising defensive talents, the Italian international’s development over the last two years has been severely hampered by injuries, including a serious cruciate ligament injury and shoulder surgery. Hamstring and adductor issues limited him to only 24 Serie A appearances last term. Yet, he continues to attract interest from the Premier League.

Scalvini has been on the radar of several English sides, with Tottenham, Chelsea and Newcastle United among those believed to be keeping close tabs on his situation at Atalanta. The 22-year-old’s renewal demonstrates commitment to the Serie A club, but it does not appear to have discouraged Spurs and other Premier League clubs from following him.

Spurs are well-stocked in central defence

For now, Tottenham have Micky van de Ven, Senesi, Van Hecke and Tosin as the centre-back options. Veteran Ben Davies can also operate as a makeshift central defender when required. Clearly, De Zerbi has enough options to juggle during the Premier League campaign.

Unless there is an injury crisis, there is no point investing in another player. So, the Lilywhites must not sign Scalvini; instead, our club bosses must use the funds to recruit a No.9 to address the goalscoring woes.
