Tottenham are planning to dip into the winter transfer window for a striker.
Despite signing 10 new players for over £300m in the summer window, Tottenham Hotspur have looked short of quality in attack.
The Lilywhites have struggled for goals while also looking shaky at the back, and it appears that there are still big holes that need to be filled in the squad. Attackers such as Omar Marmoush, Savio and Mykhailo Mudryk have arrived at the club, but none of them has yet to make any goal contribution.
Crystal Palace icon Clinton Morrison recently claimed that Roberto De Zerbi missed a trick by not signing a pure No.9. Indeed, Tottenham have managed to score just two goals in their opening five Premier League matches. Both goals were insignificant in the larger context, as they were mere consolation in the club’s 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.
Freiburg striker says Tottenham interest “motivates” him
Recent reports are already suggesting that Tottenham are looking at various strikers on the market ahead of January, which is not surprising given their struggles in front of goal so far this campaign. Reliable journalist Ben Jacobs has stated Igor Matanovic and Tottenham could be one to watch in the winter transfer window, with the club chiefs admirers of the Freiburg striker.
The 6ft 5in Igor Matanovic was linked with a move to Spurs in the final weeks of the summer transfer window. The Croatian international enjoyed a decent debut campaign with Freiburg, netting 15 goals in all competitions. He has enjoyed a fantastic start to the 2026/27 campaign, registering six goals and two assists in seven outings.
The 23-year-old has been called up to the national team squad for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures. When asked about interest from the Premier League while on international duty, Matanovic told Croatian outlet Večernji list (h/t Sport Witness).
“I’m not thinking about that. I’m focused on the pitch because I know everything else depends on how you train and play.
“When there is talk of interest from such clubs, it shows you are on the right track. It can serve as extra motivation to keep going in the same direction.
“But my focus is on Freiburg – on continuing to play good football and winning as many matches as possible.”
It appears Matanovic could make a difference for Spurs if he joins the North London club in the January transfer window. He would add some much-needed depth in the final third and provide a different dynamic up front compared to Solanke. The big Croat is a targetman, thanks to his physical prowess and aerial ability, capable of bringing his fellow forwards into the game.
So, there is no harm in testing Freiburg’s resolve for Matanovic’s signature in January.
