Christian Falk confirms Spurs made contact for 6ft 3in Bayern Munich defender ahead of crucial contract negotiations.
Tottenham Hotspur have registered concrete interest in Bayern Munich defender Kim Min-jae, with initial contact confirmed as Spurs assess potential options to bolster their backline. Despite splashing over £300 million during the summer transfer window, Tottenham find themselves in an alarming situation, sitting 20th in the Premier League table after a winless five-match opening stretch.
According to transfer insider Christian Falk via TEAMtalk, Tottenham were among a select group of European clubs that made contact regarding the 6ft 3in South Korean international over the summer. While no official bid materialised before the deadline, Spurs remain attentive to the defender’s contractual situation in Munich.
Three-Way Battle for South Korean Defender
Tottenham are not alone in tracking the 29-year-old central defender. Premier League rivals Aston Villa and Serie A heavyweights AC Milan also initiated exploratory contact with Bayern Munich during the summer window.
The interest across Europe stems directly from Kim’s contract timeline. The South Korea international will have just one year remaining on his current Bayern Munich contract at the end of the 2026/27 season, placing the Bavarian giants in a delicate position heading into upcoming negotiation windows.
Speaking on the situation, Falk detailed how Bayern Munich hold the primary leverage as internal contract discussions draw near:
“I can say it’s still true that Bayern Munich will be the first club he opens any kind of talks with. But it will depend on a number of things, like what Bayern are offering this autumn when they open talks over his future? Will they say Min-jae Kim can sign a new contract? Or is he still one of the players the club would consider selling to bring in some money?”
“This is why other clubs have Kim in their focus. Aston Villa is interested, and I heard both Tottenham and AC Milan are also looking at the South Korean international. In fact the three clubs in question already made contact in the summer for Kim, but in the end there was no offer.”
Despite playing only three Bundesliga matches during the early stages of the current campaign, Kim is not actively attempting to force an exit from the Allianz Arena. The commanding defender remains committed to fighting for his place in Bayern’s starting XI, recognizing that squad rotation and potential injuries will afford him starting opportunities across domestic and Champions League competitions.
Falk confirmed that a winter transfer during the January window is highly unlikely, as Bayern Munich value the defender’s depth and experience too much to sanction a mid-season departure.
“So, nothing concrete at the moment. I wouldn’t expect a January move or anything. Everything will depend on what Bayern Munich will tell Kim in contract talks this year.”
For head coach Roberto De Zerbi, targetting a defender of Kim Min-jae’s stature makes strong tactical sense. Known for his aerial dominance, physical recovery pace, and progressive passing out from the back, Kim possesses the essential attributes required to execute De Zerbi’s high-line build-up system.
While an immediate January arrival appears off the table, Tottenham’s recruitment team will closely monitor Bayern’s autumn contract talks. Should negotiations stall between the German champions and the defender, Spurs could position themselves at the front of the queue to secure a high-profile defensive leader ahead of the 2027/28 campaign.
