‘They don’t really give you a pathway’ – Jamie Donley admits he was pushed away from Tottenham by Roberto De Zerbi

Tottenham academy graduate sealed a loan move to Luton Town in the final week of the summer transfer window.

Many Tottenham Hotspur fans will remember the 2026 summer transfer window fondly, as their club, for the first time in a while, looked to show some intent and ambition.

The Lilywhites were unyielding in the pursuit of their targets to improve their squad. The Roberto De Zerbi-managed club went on to land 10 players before the transfer deadline passed, taking the spending close to £400 million. The heavy spending led to several departures, with players either released, loaned out or sold.

Jamie Donley was one of the players to leave Tottenham on loan. The 21-year-old sealed a season-long temporary switch to League One club Luton Town after a tough 2025/26 season. The creative midfielder struggled for game time in the first half of last season at Stoke City, forcing Spurs to terminate his loan in January and send him to Oxford Town, where he only managed one goal across 13 games.

Jamie Donley admits being pushed away by Roberto De Zerbi after big-money summer signings

Donley was heavily involved in Tottenham’s pre-season tour of Australia and New Zealand under De Zerbi. However, the Northern Ireland international decided to leave on loan after learning his pathway to first-team football will be challenging this season.

The playmaker shared that De Zerbi told him that he liked him as a player, but admits he was “pushed out” following the heavy investment the North London club made to reinforce the midfield department.

“When I came in for pre-season I spoke to [De Zerbi] a little bit, and he said that he liked me, and I went out to Australia and played quite a lot,” Donley was quoted by Football London.

“Then a few of the lads came back from the World Cup and so then I was kind of pushed away a little bit. Towards the end of the window, I had a clear idea of what I was going to be doing.

“It’s difficult because there’s so many players and they’re signing £100million players. I’m not arrogant enough to think I’m going to be playing over them.

“They don’t really give you a pathway. It’s about getting minutes. I’m still young, so it’s about doing well and going back next year and showing progress.”

Bright start to Luton Town spell

Donley attracted significant interest throughout the summer. Eventually, he made the move to Luton Town, joining his old academy teammate Josh Keeley. The playmaker has started his spell with Luton well, bagging a goal and an assist apiece in five appearances.

The 21-year-old previously made a significant impression during a standout loan stint at Leyton Orient, where he earned Player of the Season and Supporters Player of the Season honours by registering eight goals and ten assists to propel them to the League One play-off final. So, dropping down to League One for his immediate development was a smart move.

Hopefully, the Tottenham academy talent gets a stable environment at Kenilworth Road to aid his development.
