Micky van de Ven replaced Cristian Romero as Tottenham’s skipper in the summer.
Tottenham Hotspur’s underwhelming start to the 2026/27 campaign has given the media plenty to discuss, especially after the club’s significant transfer outlay in the summer.
Some pundits are already asking the Spurs board to part ways with head coach Roberto De Zerbi, even though the 47-year-old kept the club in the Premier League back in May. Indeed, speculation over De Zerbi’s long-term future in North London has escalated sharply. However, club legend Chris Hughton has offered vocal support to De Zerbi and urged the Lilywhites to stick with the Italian tactician.
Former goalkeeper claims Tottenham star remains committed to the club’s project amid heavy interest
Amid the club being stranded at the bottom of the table, skipper Micky van de Ven has been linked with a move away from Tottenham. Recent reports indicate Manchester United have identified Micky van de Ven as their top defensive target of the 2027 summer transfer window, while Liverpool want him to replace club legend Virgil van Dijk.
However, former goalkeeper Michel Vorm is convinced his compatriot is going to be a key player for the North Londoners in the future, especially after he signed a new long-term deal earlier this summer.
“I spoke with him, I think, just after he signed for Tottenham. The thing is, he came from Germany, a totally different league, so the question was could he do the same here that he did in the Bundesliga, especially intensity-wise? He’s very fast, so he had to adapt; he’s overcome a couple of injuries and look at him now. Wow. He’s a machine,” Michel Vorm said in a Q/A session with the club’s official website.
“I think also with his age and his leadership on the pitch, I think he’s going to be a very, very important player for Tottenham, but also for the national team of Holland. He’s signed a new deal, he’s committed to the club, and this is what you need. Both parties made a real statement – and he deserved it. For us, it’s brilliant.”
Van de Ven can become a Tottenham great
Since making his move to North London from Wolfsburg in 2023, Van de Ven has established himself as an indispensable presence in Tottenham’s first XI. Known for his recovery speed, distribution skills, aerial capability, and leadership from the back, the defender has quickly become a fan favourite and a valued figure among his peers inside the dressing room.
He took over the leadership role at White Hart Lane before the season started. The Dutchman’s elevation to the captaincy comes as part of a structured overhaul of the dressing room hierarchy under De Zerbi. The 25-year-old is the ideal face to maintain and drive high standards, strong mentality, commitment and shared accountability across the entire squad.
Van de Ven has the qualities to become a Tottenham great, provided he stays committed and rebuffs the overtures of bigger clubs in the Premier League and across Europe.
