Pedro Porro has been a key player for Tottenham in the last couple of seasons.
Ten new signings arrived at Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with close to £400million being splashed out. In came Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Savio, Jan Paul van Hecke and Tosin Adarabioyo, while Omar Marmoush and Mykhailo Mudryk joined on loan deals from Manchester City and Chelsea, respectively.
At the same time, Spurs managed to keep hold of some stars amid heavy speculation over their futures. Pedro Porro was one of those. The right-back was heavily linked to an exit, but stayed and penned a new deal until 2031 with the club. The North Londoners have the option to extend his contract by a further 12 months, with Roberto De Zerbi playing a key role in convincing the Spaniard to commit his future to Spurs.
After helping Tottenham beat the drop last term, Pedro Porro enjoyed a spectacular summer with his national team. The 27-year-old was one of the key cogs in Luis de la Fuente’s Spanish side that won the World Cup.
Pedro Porro tipped to join Barcelona
Since returning to North London, though, Porro has struggled with form and fitness. The full-back has been a part of De Zerbi’s side that is yet to register a Premier League win this season. The 27-year-old is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, and in the ongoing international break, he travelled back to his homeland to speed up the recovery process.
Now, according to former scout Mick Brown, Porro could be one of several Spurs players tempted to leave if De Zerbi can’t turn his team’s form around quickly. Barcelona are named as a potential destination for the defender.
“It’s going to be interesting to see what happens with players like Pedro Porro,” Mick Brown exclusively told Football Insider.
“The key will be if Tottenham continue to struggle, because if they finish down the bottom of the table again, it’s going to be very hard to keep hold of their best players. He’s been happy at Tottenham; that’s why he signed a new contract in the summer, but if they keep finishing low down the table and they’re not in Europe, how long will that last?
“He’s on a long-term contract, but if Barcelona come calling, I think there is a very real chance that he could be tempted away. It would mean a move back to Spain, where he’s obviously very highly thought of after winning the World Cup, and maybe that’s something he would be interested in.
“As I say, I’m told he’s happy at Tottenham for now, but that might change if their results don’t improve quickly.”
Porro could be tempted to return to Spain
Given his display of consistency and leadership in the last two years, Tottenham bosses would have been delighted with Porro signing a contract extension until 2031. This also demonstrates his faith in De Zerbi’s project at White Hart Lane.
The Spanish international has undergone a phenomenal transformation, refining his defensive capabilities while remaining a strong attacking outlet on the right flank. His immense importance to the Tottenham squad was fully evident throughout a taxing domestic campaign.
That said, however, De Zerbi has to turn the club’s fortunes around and fulfil the promises made to Porro if the Lilywhites are to retain him. The North Londoners have to be competitive in the Premier League and match the World Cup winner’s lofty ambitions, or else, there will always be a temptation for him to return to Spain and join one of their giants.
