Tottenham may raid the South American market in January for a talented winger.
Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a huge squad overhaul in the summer after narrowly beating the drop last season. Yet, Roberto De Zerbi is struggling to get his team creating chances and scoring goals.
Summer signing Savio has shown flashes of his potential, but he’s yet to register a goal contribution in the Premier League, while Mathys Tel bore the brunt of De Zerbi for not following his instructions on the pitch after the 0-0 draw with Everton. The Lilywhites have not been helped by the injuries to Dejan Kulusevski and Xavi Simons, and with James Maddison still not 100 per cent fit, they could seriously consider entering the transfer market to solve their creativity issues.
Reports from September suggest that Tottenham have been keeping close tabs on Boca Juniors prodigy Leonel Flores. In fact, Spurs and Brighton have tabled a proposal for the exciting attacker. He has a release clause of around €13million at Boca Juniors, and both Tottenham and Brighton are willing to trigger it when the transfer window reopens in January.
Leonel Flores dazzles on his Argentina debut
Flores made his Argentina debut against Bolivia in a friendly fixture on Wednesday evening. The 19-year-old came on in the 81st minute, replacing Exequiel Palacios. Only nine minutes were enough for the Boca Juniors talent to make an impact; he set up Flaco Lopez for Argentina’s fourth goal with a piece of artistry and flair.
The winger didn’t look overwhelmed by the pressure and spotlight on his Argentina debut; instead, he appeared to enjoy every moment on the pitch against Bolivia.
“I’ve had quite a lot of personality since I was a kid. When I get the ball, I don’t care who’s in front of me,” Flores told in an interview to AS (h/t TyC Sports).
“I’ve dreamed about this since I was a kid. I played calmly and with confidence.”
If Tottenham had scouts in attendance, they would have liked Flores’ confidence and personality on his first cap for Argentina. What makes it even more intriguing is that this was his first appearance for La Albiceleste at any level. He hadn’t even represented his country in the youth teams before the Bolivia friendly.
Nine minutes wasn’t much time to make a huge impression, of course, yet he did by creating Flaco’s goal. The important bit was simply getting his first senior appearance. This means Spurs are now looking at a senior Argentina international who has scary potential.
