Tottenham could revive their interest in Greek star when the transfer window reopens in January.
Tottenham Hotspur have faced problems in every department of the pitch since the start of the 2026/27 season.
Spurs have registered only two points from five games and are stranded at the bottom of the Premier League table. Their issues in front of goal have been laid bare this season. Roberto De Zerbi’s men have scored just twice in five league outings, with Dominic Solanke out of form and Richarlison currently frozen out of the squad. Summer signing Omar Marmoush has also failed to find the back of the net so far.
The lack of goals and cutting edge in the front line has been enough proof that Spurs need a new centre-forward during the winter transfer window.

Tottenham get surprise boost to land Benfica star
Spurs were reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Benfica striker Vangelis Pavlidis during the summer transfer window. Roberto De Zerbi had identified the Greek international to lead his team’s attack, but a move did not materialise. This is due to new Benfica manager Marco Silva blocking the marksman’s move.
Vangelis Pavlidis had a €100m release clause in his contract, and the Eagles were calm about his situation. Also, they didn’t want to sell the 27-year-old off the back of another strong season to undermine Marco Silva. However, that does not mean a move away from Estadio da Luz won’t materialise in the future.
According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola (h/t Sport Witness), Pavlidis wants to fulfil his dream of playing in the Premier League.
“The Greek international has also always maintained a consistent and professional attitude on the subject, admitting that he dreams of a bigger step, preferring English football as his career dream, but always clarifying that he would never leave without Benfica’s agreement, in a deal that proved good for both parties,” A Bola reports (h/t Sport Witness).
This gives Tottenham and other Premier League clubs an edge over other suitors across Europe. Spurs can help fulfil Pavlidis’s dream of playing in the English top flight.
The 27-year-old has been a prolific goalscorer for Benfica since arriving from AZ Alkmaar in 2024, netting 74 goals in 123 appearances thus far. The Greek has also demonstrated the creative side of his game by supplying 22 assists during this period. He has been on fire since the start of the campaign, bagging 14 goals in 13 games in all competitions already.
At 27, Pavlidis is at the peak of his powers and has the qualities to make an immediate impact at Spurs. He could provide the focal point to the Lilywhites’ attack that has been missing this season. If the striker expresses a desire to leave Benfica in January, Spurs should be all over his signing.
