Tottenham defender Amanda Nilden reveals tactical shift behind 15-goal WSL scoring spree

Amanda Nilden believes improved composure when playing out from the back has unlocked Tottenham Hotspur’s lethal attack in the Women’s Super League.

Goals have arrived at a blistering pace for Tottenham Hotspur Women during the opening month of the campaign. Four matches into the new term, the squad leads the entire division in scoring with fifteen strikes to their name. Eleven of those goals came in just two matches, proving this front line possesses relentless firepower.

What makes this scoring spree even more impressive is the squad’s shared responsibility. Eight different players have already registered goals, highlighted by an emphatic 7-0 dismantling of Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Yet the foundation for this attacking dominance actually began inside their own defensive third.

Amanda Nilden has embraced a major tactical shift herself this term by slotting into central defence. The Swedish international has anchored a backline that conceded just two league goals while securing four consecutive clean sheets in all competitions. That defensive solidity provides total freedom for the forwards.

Composure Under Pressure Unlocks Devastating Final Third Chemistry

Speaking to the official matchday programme ahead of Sunday’s clash with London City Lionesses, Nilden explained the daily work behind the sudden scoring surge. She noted that familiarity with the tactical system has allowed every player to perform with complete clarity.

“We have really reached our levels early this season,” Nilden said. “We have kept working from last year on how we want to be on the pitch and the attacking football we want to play, and I think in these games at the start of the season, we have really got the results.”

Her transition to centre back gives the setup extra composure against aggressive opposition presses. “Even from the back, to be able to play out from all types of pressures, we have improved a lot,” Nilden explained. “Also, to just see all the combinations higher up on the pitch is nice for us as defenders.”

With three victories and a draw secured, the Lilywhites aim to maintain momentum as passionate supporters continue driving their fearless football forward.
