Chelsea vs Tottenham | Predicted XI for Spurs | Premier League 2023/24

The recent 3-2 loss against Arsenal for Tottenham hurt in more than one way. First off, the obvious. No points from a home game despite an inspired second-half performance. Second, injury issues, and plenty.

Timo Werner and Ben Davies, who started on the left side against the Gunners, both see themselves ruled out of the rest of the campaign. Davies picked up a calf injury against Mikel Arteta’s side about an hour after Werner came off in the same game owing to a hamstring injury. [h/t Express]

Brennan Johnson immediately replaced the German and Giovani Lo Celso came on for Davies. The absence of the Welshman is a major problem now, considering we don’t have a natural left-back to come in as a replacement.

Timo Werner will not return to Stamford Bridge as a Tottenham player this term.

Who will play?

Destiny Udogie, who was injured in training ahead of the Arsenal clash will also miss out on the rest of the season. Other injury issues include long-term ones; Fraser Foster, Manor Solomon and Ryan Sessegnon.

Now, it is certain that these lads will not play a part against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Let’s compile a possible playing XI with the rest of the squad. In goal, Guglielmo Vicario, as usual. He will be keen to make an impact against the Blues, after letting past four last time around with no major fault of his own.

Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero in the heart of the defence flanked by Pedro Porro on the right, and probably Emerson Royal on the left. The Brazilian international has been a makeshift player for Ange Postecoglou this season and has been great. However, it would be interesting to see whether the right-footed Emerson takes field as the left-back or could Spurs opt for Bryan Gil in an unusual role there. The Spaniard can whip crosses into the box with his left foot, but defensive vulnerabilities would come to the fore with him.

The midfield could see some chopping and changing. Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg were not great against Arsenal. We could expect a midfield of Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma behind James Maddison. As far as the attack is concerned, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski are the obvious choices.

However, to replace Werner, whether the gaffer picks Johnson, or Richarlison is something we would know closer to kick-off. Both players have been promising this term. For the sake of assumption, let’s just say Johnson will start against Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Hopefully, we avenge our first loss of the season. That loss derailed our entire campaign. We were unbeaten until that point. They gave us injuries and multiple ones at that. We have to avenge that loss and make a statement that AngeBall is here, and to stay!
