For long, the English National team has not won a trophy and it is something that would bother the English fans. However, there has never been a shortage of talented players and we have seen some spectacular bunch of players take the pitch for England. Paul Scholes, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and David Beckham are a few.
The current set of English players have Wayne Rooney to look up to and why not? He is an absolute legend, isn’t he? The present England team has a lot of talented players and the fact has caught the eye of Pep Guardiola, who has come out in praise of the English talents at Tottenham Hotspur.
Over the last few years, Tottenham have seen the remarkable rise of English youngsters like Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Harry Winks. Kyle Walker and Danny Rose are two other English players at White Hart Lane who have managed to establish themselves at the club.
As quoted by The Evening Standard, Guardiola said:
“I would like English players because they know the league and that is much better. I am really impressed with how many good English players your country has. Tottenham players, the English players are all amazing. City, United, Chelsea players as well… Chelsea do not have many but players like (Gary) Cahill as well.”
The long and illustrious history of Tottenham has seen many English players become club greats. Of 60 players in the club’s history to have been inducted into the club’s hall of fame, 42 players are English. It is no surprise that the club, even today, nurture English talent and rightfully so, the current set of English youngsters at Tottenham have caught the attention of Pep Guardiola, who signed John Stones from Everton when he took over as Man City boss. He also has Raheem Sterling to work with and he is right when he said he would like to work with English players. Manchester City have struggled to produce homegrown talent and it is logical that they try and lure English youngsters from rival clubs in the league.
