Anthony Martial

Manchester United are looking to activate a contract extension for Anthony Martial which would keep him at Old Trafford until 2020, according to the Daily Star.

Martial has been linked with a move to Tottenham, especially after his agent had stated that the former Monaco man would want to play football somewhere else this season.

The French attacker has not had the greatest of times under Jose Mourinho and only sparkled in a few games last season. His lack of form in front of goal saw him miss out on the World Cup with the France squad and it would hurt him even more now, given that Les Bleus picked up the crown.

Martial moved to Old Trafford in 2015 for a fee of £36m but things have not gone according to the script for the French attacker.

Juventus are also interested in the Frenchman but United are looking to activate his contract extension would be a huge problem for any club wanting to sign him up.

While United would want to keep Martial and give him a chance to prove his ability in the attack, the extended contract would mean us paying a far greater sum to sign the player up.

This could be a ploy from United to increase the value of the Frenchman given that there is interest from a couple of high-profile clubs for the 22-year-old.

We have not brought in a single player so far but we could do with another option in the attack, with Martial joining Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

However, United seem to be playing hard-ball and there is no doubt the Martial saga will continue throughout the summer.
