Spurs news: Frenkie de Jong confirms bid from Spurs but reveals why he chose Barcelona

Frenkie de Jong is one of the highest rated youngsters coming through the Dutch league.

The 21-year-old has been excellent for Ajax this season and recently sealed a move to La Liga giants Barcelona.

Ajax and Barcelona have a connection that goes back to the days of Johan Cruyff that has seen many players switch clubs.

Tottenham have also formed a mini-connection in recent years thanks to the signings of Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen.

De Jong was speaking to FourFourTwo about his decision to join Barcelona and revealed that Tottenham submitted a bid.

The youngster added that he didn’t feel the moment was right when Spurs bid last year and wanted to spend more time at Ajax, despite thinking about the move (h/t Mirror):

“I considered their offer long and hard. I see Tottenham as a very stable club, and they are only getting better.”

The Dutch midfielder highlighted that the team would have suited him and praised Mauricio Pochettino.

“They give young players a chance and I see Mauricio Pochettino as a manager who really improves young players. I like the kind of football they are playing. I think it would have suited my game.”

Tough to say no to Barcelona

The 21-year-old, however, decided not to take up the Tottenham offer and claimed he always wanted to play for them:

“I’d always wanted to play for Barcelona.”

The midfielder also added that such opportunities don’t come again, and he had to take the deal.

“I felt I had to grab the opportunity, because maybe it wouldn’t come around again.”

De Jong has three goals and two assists in the Dutch league this season and was one of the stars as they defeated Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Tottenham should be in the transfer market in the summer after failing to sign a player for more than a year.

Spanish outlet AS (h/t Mirror) claims that Tottenham want €60-70million from Christian Eriksen’s sale as the Dane enters the final year of his contract.

The 27-year-old was signed from Ajax in 2013 and has become one of the best in the Premier League.

The Dane helped us reach the Champions League final last season, but wants a different challenge ahead of the new season.

Eriksen has travelled to Asia for the pre-season tour but the report claims that Atletico Madrid are set to bid for the Dane.

A Tottenham member also met with the CEO of Atletico, Miguel Angel Gill, to discuss a deal for Eriksen (h/t Mirror).

Lo Celso scored 15 times for the club in La Liga, and Betis signed the Argentine for £20m in the summer (h/t Sun). The 23-year-old is also being chased by Manchester United, while the report adds that Tottenham were leading the race at one point.

However, Tottenham are uninterested in paying £60million for the talented midfielder, and Lo Celso has told Betis he wants to join Spurs (h/t Sun).

The 23-year-old could play as an attacking midfielder and is versatile enough to play out wide too.

Tottenham see Lo Celso as an Eriksen replacement

The report claims that Tottenham see the Argentine as a replacement for Christian Eriksen. The Dane is out of a contract at the end of next season and has been linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Tottenham have also seen a £53m bid rejected earlier in the window for the Argentine, and Mauricio Pochettino wants Lo Celso at Tottenham next season (h/t Sun).

Lo Celso did well for the national side in the Copa America too, and it will be an interesting summer for him.

Spurs transfer news: Tottenham target Ismaily as Danny Rose’s replacement

Danny Rose was left behind by Tottenham as the team went off to Asia for a pre-season tour.

The English defender will try to seal a move away in the summer and Calciomercato (h/t Football.london) claims that Spurs see Ismaily as a replacement for the left-back.

The Brazilian has tons of experience playing for Shakhtar Donetsk and was even selected for a friendly by the national side.

Ismaily, however, signed a new deal with Shakhtar recently (h/t Football.london) and he is an interesting choice to replace Rose.

Age should be a factor when searching for Rose’s replacement

Spurs have Ben Davies as the other senior left-back in the team, and the Welshman signed a new long-term deal to stay at the club.

Ismaily might have a ton of experience, however, he is not a young defender being 29-years-old.

Spurs should consider signing defenders who have the potential to develop further, while Ismaily is in the prime of his career.

The Brazilian would not be a bad second choice to provide cover for Davies, however, the left-back would want to start regularly as he does with the Ukrainian side.

The 29-year-old is an attacking full-back, who would work well under Mauricio Pochettino, and it will be interesting to see if we sign him once Rose leaves.

The English defender did a decent job for us in the second half of the previous campaign and we should get a good deal by selling him.

Spurs transfer news: Tottenham offer Eriksen £200,000-a-week contract in hopes of keeping star

Tottenham have offered Christian Eriksen a new contract worth £200,000-a-week, according to the Daily Mail (h/t Metro).

The Danish midfielder will be a free agent at the end of next season and several top European clubs are interested in his services.

Real Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona are all keen on the 27-year-old (h/t Metro), and the Dane also spoke about taking up a new challenge recently.

Tottenham want to keep hold of their creative midfielder and the report claims that the new deal is substantially higher than his current contract worth £80,000-a-week.

Eriksen, however, is taking his decision not on the basis of wages offered but on the possibility of a great opportunity arising (h/t Metro).

Madrid and Barcelona have spent big this summer while Juventus have also been big spenders in the transfer window.

Spurs have to make a decision on Eriksen

The report adds that Daniel Levy could look to sell Eriksen this summer if the Dane does not sign a new deal with the club.

Tottenham need to wrap up their transfer business as quickly as possible since losing Eriksen just before the start of the season would mess up our preparations.

The Dane has travelled with the side for the pre-season Asia tour and should feature against Juventus and Manchester United in the coming days.
