Spurs news: Frenkie de Jong confirms bid from Spurs but reveals why he chose Barcelona

Frenkie de Jong is one of the highest rated youngsters coming through the Dutch league.

The 21-year-old has been excellent for Ajax this season and recently sealed a move to La Liga giants Barcelona.

Ajax and Barcelona have a connection that goes back to the days of Johan Cruyff that has seen many players switch clubs.

Tottenham have also formed a mini-connection in recent years thanks to the signings of Davinson Sanchez, Christian Eriksen and Jan Vertonghen.

De Jong was speaking to FourFourTwo about his decision to join Barcelona and revealed that Tottenham submitted a bid.

The youngster added that he didn’t feel the moment was right when Spurs bid last year and wanted to spend more time at Ajax, despite thinking about the move (h/t Mirror):

“I considered their offer long and hard. I see Tottenham as a very stable club, and they are only getting better.”

The Dutch midfielder highlighted that the team would have suited him and praised Mauricio Pochettino.

“They give young players a chance and I see Mauricio Pochettino as a manager who really improves young players. I like the kind of football they are playing. I think it would have suited my game.”

Tough to say no to Barcelona

The 21-year-old, however, decided not to take up the Tottenham offer and claimed he always wanted to play for them:

“I’d always wanted to play for Barcelona.”

The midfielder also added that such opportunities don’t come again, and he had to take the deal.

“I felt I had to grab the opportunity, because maybe it wouldn’t come around again.”

De Jong has three goals and two assists in the Dutch league this season and was one of the stars as they defeated Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Tottenham should be in the transfer market in the summer after failing to sign a player for more than a year.
