Tottenham Hotspur keen on Rennes striker Mbaye Niang
This is the second time that Spurs are keen on the player. We were unsuccessful in our efforts to land him when he was just 16.
Now 25, he has played for seven clubs across four European leagues. Interestingly, he also has Premier League experience. He spent a season on loan at Watford, scoring two goals and two assists in 16 games. (h/t Transfermarkt)
He scored 15 goals and two assists in 36 games this season. His performances have helped Rennes finish 3rd in the Ligue 1 season. This has ensured that the club qualified for the third qualification round of the Champions League qualifiers.
According to the report, Spurs have already made contact with the player’s representatives this summer. The biggest threat is likely to come from former boss Andre Villas-Boas currently in charge of Marseille.
The major problem we face is our inability to offer him regular first-team football. Harry Kane is the undisputed striker at the club. It is unlikely that the Senegalese will get much time if Jose Mourinho decides to play one striker up front.
The lack of cover for Kane has been a constant source of frustration. Injuries to him this season has seen us fall behind in our aspirations for the season.
Not only will we end another season trophyless, but have ruined the advantage we held in the race for the top four. Instead, we now find ourselves in 8th spot, seven points behind 4th-placed Chelsea.

Niang is an excellent backup striker. He may not be the best in the business but is capable of doing a job. A versatile player, he is also capable of playing on either wing. Whether we pursue him or not remains to be seen.
