Tottenham will be able to sign Jesse Lingard only if Dele Alli leaves

According to reputed journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur will only be able to move for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard if Dele Alli leaves the club.

Tottenham have been linked with a surprise swoop for Lingard, who is currently out of favour at Manchester United. The England international wasn’t part of the matchday squad for their opening game against Crystal Palace, which has left him seething. (h/t Daily Star)

And Spurs’ manager Jose Mourinho, who worked with Lingard during his time at Manchester United, is considering offering the 27-year-old a lifeline, by bringing him to Tottenham in a deal worth £30m. (h/t Daily Star)

However, as per Fabrizio Romano, any such move would only be possible if the club are able to offload Dele Alli in the ongoing transfer window.

Alli’s future at the club has become a subject of intense transfer speculation after he was left out of the matchday squad for Tottenham’s last two matches. There have been reports of PSG taking an interest in the situation, with the Ligue 1 giants even holding talks with the player’s camp over the possibility of a move. (h/t The Telegraph)

Mourinho hasn’t been forthcoming on the matter of Alli’s exclusion, but did claim that the Englishman doesn’t need to be sacrificed this summer. However, if the Portuguese wants to sign Lingard from his former employers, he may have to get rid of Alli, according to Romano.

Lingard has been out of form for well over a year now. And although he did well under Mourinho at United, signing him wouldn’t be the most ideal piece of business at this moment.
