Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho eyeing Jesse Lingard swoop

According to an exclusive report from the Daily Star, Tottenham Hotspur are considering making a shock swoop for Manchester United star Jesse Lingard this summer.

A product of the Manchester United academy, Lingard has been a member of the first-team squad for a number of years now. Till date, he has racked up 207 appearances for the club, scoring 33 goals in the process.

However, the England international has fallen down the pecking order at the club over the last season. Lingard started just nine Premier League games in 2019/20, hardly featuring once Bruno Fernandes was signed in the January transfer window.

Now with Donny van de Beek also arriving, Lingard is likely to fall further down the ladder of preference. As per the report, Lingard was left seething after being omitted from the matchday squad against Crystal Palace.  The Englishman finds himself in limbo at Old Trafford. (h/t Daily Star)

And, Jose Mourinho, who managed Lingard for over two years, is now looking to capitalise on the situation. The Portuguese tactician has been keeping a close eye on the 27-year-old’s situation. And he may now look to offer him a chance to revive his career with Tottenham in a £30m deal. (h/t Daily Star)

A versatile operator, Lingard can operate in a multitude of positions, and had been a key part of Mourinho’s team at Old Trafford. However, his form has been on the wane for well over a year now. And signing him doesn’t seem like the smartest move at the moment.

We do need a new attacking midfielder to compete with Giovani Lo Celso. More so, considering Dele Alli’s future has suddenly become a subject of intense speculation. However, Lingard would hardly represent the right solution for the club. Spending £30m on him would be a waste of resources.
