Tottenham serious about signing Wout Weghorst from Wolfsburg

According to Dutch publication Tabantia (h/t Football.london), Tottenham Hotspur have ‘serious interest’ in signing Netherlands international striker Wout Weghorst from VfL Wolfsburg this summer.

The 28-year-old came through the youth ranks at Dutch club DETO and had spells at Willem II, FC Emmen, Heracles Almelo before he joined AZ Alkmaar in 2016. In 86 appearances for the club over two years, he scored 45 goals, before signing for Wolfsburg in 2018.

Since joining the Bundesliga outfit, the Dutch forward has continued to score at an impressive rate. Last season saw Weghorst bag an impressive 20 goals in 43 appearances across all competitions, while setting up five more. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Weghorst has started the 2020/21 season on a positive note as well, scoring twice in three matches across all competitions already. And his goalscoring exploits with the German outfit have seemingly put him on the radars of Tottenham Hotspur. (h/t Football.london)

Spurs have had an impressive transfer window up until this point. There have been five new signings made with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart, Matt Doherty, Sergio Reguilon and Gareth Bale (loan) arriving. However, a new striker remains a priority for Tottenham, with absolutely no cover for star man Harry Kane.

And as per the reports in Netherlands (h/t Football.london), the club are seriously considering a move for Weghorst and want to wrap up a deal in the coming week. However, they will face resistance from Wolfsburg, who are likely to be reluctant to sell him this summer.

Weghorst had an impressive 2019/20 season and has begun the new campaign strongly as well. An in form forward, with experience and in his peak years, he could prove to be a fine acquisition for the club. However, with still three years on his contract with Wolfsburg, it might be tough to negotiate a transfer.
