Jose Mourinho backs Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris as he makes Alisson comparison
Speaking ahead of the Europa League game (h/t Mirror), Jose Mourinho has said that Hugo Lloris is still the first-choice goalkeeper and brought up Liverpool’s Alisson to defend the Tottenham goalkeeper.
Lloris joined Spurs in the summer of 2012 from Olympique Lyonnaise. Since then, the veteran has played over 350 games for the club and is Tottenham’s captain.
However, the 34-year-old has been under the microscope for his performances of late. His errors against Manchester City and Everton in February were deemed costly by many.
Mourinho is not fazed by it and stated that the World Cup winner is still very much the club’s No.1. Lloris has played every single minute of league football for Spurs this season.
“…he’s still the same goalkeeper. He’s my No.1 choice and he has all my trust and my confidence.”
Lloris still the first choice
The gaffer even brought up Alisson Becker’s name during the interview. He highlighted how the Brazilian is one of the best in the world but still made mistakes for Liverpool recently.
“…in the matches before he [Alisson] has made big mistakes but he’s one of the top 5 goalkeepers in the world. And Hugo is the same. He… is performing super consistently since he recovered from that fracture.”
Mourinho is not wrong. Goalkeepers are under more scrutiny as a small mistake can be very costly and thus, overly scrutinized.
Spurs now face the task of facing Wolsfberger in the Europa League tonight. Joe Hart has been deputizing for the Frenchman in Europe this season as he has made 5 appearances so far.
