Tottenham News: Jose Mourinho issues challenge to players after Villa win
According to news outlet Metro, Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho has set a new challenge for his players after the win against Aston Villa.
Tottenham bounced back to winning ways as they defeated Aston Villa 2-0 at the Villa Park. The result was a much-needed one following the disheartening defeats to Aston Villa and Dinamo Zagreb over the past week.
Goals from Harry Kane and Carlos Vinicius ensured that Spurs got the vital three points against Aston Villa. The result also meant Mourinho’s men are now in sixth place in the Premier League table, just three points below Chelsea in fourth.
Following the disappointing display against Dinamo Zagreb, this was a major improvement from the team – a team that had seven changes, with the likes of Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga and Vinicius getting rare starts.
And Mourinho was pleased with the attitude that his team showed. But, he also lamented how it was sad that a defeat was needed for his players to step up. He then demanded the squad to perform at this level on a consistent basis.
“Total credit to the players. An incredible attitude and effort. They gave everything. The team was a team. The next challenge as a team is not to play like this as a reaction to an awful performance. Playing with this state of mind, this soul, should be a permanent thing.”
The Tottenham manager also seemed to aim a sly dig at some players for putting selfish needs in front of the team’s interest.
“Football is not easy. The individual interests are around. The agents are around. Instead of a feeling of team empathy – I do for you, you do for me – you need time to develop this in a group.”
