Tottenham Hotspur confirmed as founding member of the newly-formed European Super League
Earlier on Sunday, it was announced (h/t Metro) that 12 teams, including Tottenham Hotspur, had confirmed their intention of creating a new breakaway competition, the European Super League.
As per the reports, the participating teams would all receive a share of the £3billion share set aside for the unveiling of this newly-formed European competition.
The member teams are – Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City, AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid.
Real Madrid president, Florentio Perez, will be the competition’s first chairman. And Spurs are confirmed as one of the founding members of the competition. (h/t Metro)
Death of football as we know it?
The Super League will ensure that all its founding members participate every year in the competition. This is regardless of where they finish in the league.
And the competition would surely mean curtains for the UEFA Champions League and even UEFA Europa League, with their revenue plummeting after top clubs breaking away to join this new European competition.
Speaking of the competition, Real Madrid president Perez said:
“We will help football at every level and take it to its rightful place in the world. Football is the only global sport in the world with more than four billion fans and our responsibility as big clubs is to respond to their desires.”
It is unclear where Perez would get this notion that fans are calling for the Super League. The competition is a way of monopolizing money and power in football in the hand of few teams.
And it is understandable why fans would be against this gross attempt to kill any competition and excitement in football. Here are some of the best Twitter reactions from Spurs fans as they protested the club being a member of the Super League.
“We must always consider our supporters, for without them there would be no professional football.” – Bill Nic
Utter utter disgrace.
