Toby Alderweireld wants Roberto Martinez at Tottenham

According to Daily Mail, Toby Alderweireld has expressed his desire to keep playing under Roberto Martinez at Tottenham or Belgium. The veteran defender is managed by Martinez in the Belgium national side. Tottenham have also been after the Spaniard to take over their managerial role.

Antonio Conte had been heavily tipped to become the new Tottenham manager over the last couple of days. Talks had been going on between the two parties for some time. However, the club decided to call off their pursuit of the Italian due to some of the 51-year-old’s demands. (h/t Evening Standard)

This is the latest setback for Tottenham in pursuit of a new manager, having seen the likes of Julian Nagelsmann, Brendan Rodgers, Hansi Flick all distance themselves from the job in the past. (h/t Evening Standard)

Alderweireld wants Martinez at Spurs

With the Euros set to start this week, Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld has spoken about his desire to keep working under Roberto Martinez. He does not mind if it is for the Belgium national side or if Martinez joins Spurs.

Roberto Martinez has been linked with the Tottenham manager’s job

“I can only say great things about him. The worst scenario would be that he doesn’t go to Tottenham or be at the national team. I just want him to be one of the two. I don’t know what the situation is. We have one goal right now, to win the Euros. Apart from that everything is on hold in terms of transfers, coaches. I don’t have any influence on that anyway so I am glad he is here.:

The Spaniard has experience of managing in England, having had stints with Swansea City, Wigan Athletic and Everton. Since taking over the Belgian national team, Martinez has turned them into the No. 1 ranked side in the FIFA World Rankings. He will once again be in the dugout for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2020.

Whether he joins Tottenham after that remains to be seen.
