Arsenal could hamper Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Weston McKennie

According to transfer news from Calciomercato (h/t Express), Arsenal could hamper the prospect of signing Weston McKennie for Tottenham Hotspur. Juventus are said to be after a new midfielder and want Granit Xhaka from our rivals. They could end up offering Tottenham target McKennie in exchange.

In a rather poor 2020/21 season for Juventus, the 23-year-old McKennie was a shining light for them. He provided some energy and zing to the side that often looked bereft of ideas. However, he came with his own off-field issues with discipline. New manager Massimiliano Allegri is not really a fan of the American and could use him to land one of his targets.

That is where Arsenal and Granit Xhaka comes in. Despite the poor start for the Swiss midfielder, Xhaka is a man in demand in Italy. Roma were linked with a move earlier and now Juventus are after him. To get him, Juve could end up offering McKennie in a swap deal to shore up the defensive midfield department.

Spurs were intent on going after McKennie in January after holding talks over the player situation last month. The midfielder was said to be valued at £40million and was a priority target for the club and Fabio Paratici. However, any potential deal will now be in jeopardy as he could end up at our rivals’ with Xhaka going the other way.

It is indeed a sucker punch with these new developments pointing towards the fact that Spurs will likely miss out on McKennie. Tottenham could have used an attack-minded, powerful midfielder like him. For now, they will have to wait and see what Juventus do.
