Gabby Agbonlahor believes Brentford’s Ivan Toney can be a strong contender to replace Harry Kane in the English squad

In conversation with talkSPORT (h/t Football.London), Former English striker Gabby Agbonlahor believes that Ivan Toney could be a great replacement for Harry Kane in the England squad at this moment.

Kane has had a pretty tough season in comparison to his natural goalscoring abilities in previous campaigns. The 28-year-old striker is yet to score in the PL this season after 7 games.  Spurs have themselves been going through a rocky period as the English captain was linked with a move to fellow rivals Manchester City.

The 28-year-old star had a pretty average game against Hungary for the Three Lions as the game needed in a 1-1 daw which only raised more doubt about the Tottenham Hotspur striker’s form this campaign

Agbonlahor expressed his views on Kane’s current situation and believes that the Brentford striker could be a strong contender to replace the English captain:

“I watched him last season in the Championship and I was intrigued to see if he could make the step up. He holds the ball up well, he can score goals, he’s good in the air – he’s done outstanding. When you’re watching England [on Tuesday night] you’re thinking he probably would’ve done a better job than Harry Kane in his current form, so he’s definitely one for me that Southgate’s probably looking at.”

Ivan Toney has already scored 2 goals and provided 2 assists across 7 PL matches this season. Apart from that the striker has been a really dependable asset and holds the ball well for his team. He has made his way from the Championship and is having a substantial impact in the Premier League too.

Gareth Southgate and Nuno Espirito Santo would both be hoping that the striker can regain his old form sooner rather than later to help their team perform more consistently. The 28-year-old may not get a lot of chances if he continues this barren patch.

That being said it may still be too early and the last time he went scoreless in his first six league games of the season was in 2015/16. He went on to score 25 goals and win the Golden Boot that campaign.
