Nuno Espirito Santo claims his Tottenham philosophy is not guided by Daniel Levy’s demands for free-flowing football

In an interview with Sky Sports, Tottenham Hostpur manager Nuno Espirito Santo has spoken about the kind of footballing environment that he is trying to create at the club with Daniel Levy in control of things.

Tottenham have been going through a rocky period recently. The fans have shown their disinterest in the current ownership. Nuno Espirito Santo just took over the managerial position for the Lilywhites this season after Jose Mourinho was unceremoniously sacked. All of this along with the transfer saga that surrounded their star player Harry Kane in the summer can be a difficult thing to handle for any manager.

The English captain has been their main striker for years but is yet to open his goal-scoring account in the Premier League this season. The victory against Aston Villa in their last Premier League fixture helped ease some of the pressure from the Portuguese manager despite losing 3 out of the 7 PL games that they have played this season.

Daniel Levy insisted that the club would try and embrace the philosophy of free-flowing football. When asked if those words had any influence on Nuno coaching style and approach to this Spurs squad the 47-year-old replied in an indifferent manner:

“With all due respect, it is not what guides me. What guides me are the players, how to improve them so that we can achieve what our fans want. Working with the players in a progressive way is what moves me. We value all the opinions and the DNA of the club. But the job is about what we have. I think everybody would love to play attacking, attractive football, whatever. But to achieve that you need time, you need consistency.”

The former Wolves manager is now handed with a fresh problem as two of his players at Tottenham have tested positive for Covid-19. This will force them to isolate for 10 days according to the standard operating procedure and miss out on the matches against Newcastle United and West Ham United in the Premier League. These players are also likely to miss the UEFA Europa Conference League fixture against SBV Vitesse on 21st October.
