Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Juventus for AS Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo
According to Italian publication Calciomercato (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur are facing off against Juventus for the services of AS Roma midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo ahead of the summer transfer window. He has been a regular for his side under the managerial tenure of Jose Mourinho.
Zaniolo has two and a half years left on his contract with Roma, but negotiations over a new deal have come to a halt. That has prompted both Tottenham and Juve to express their interest in getting his signature to boost their squad.
Fabio Paratici is a keen admirer of the 22-year-old, which could pave the way for Spurs to try and bring in the youngster to N17. Whether they make an approach for the ex-Inter Milan and Fiorentina youth starlet remains to be seen.
Potential summer signing?
The Italian has been a crucial part of Mourinho’s challenge to get into the European spots this season. He has featured in 26 matches so far and has scored four goals and assisted five times across all competitions this season.
The Roma ace is primarily an attacking midfielder but has been utilized on the right flank by Mourinho so far. Following the departure of players like Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele, we are a bit light in midfield despite the arrival of Rodrigo Bentancur.
As such, it wouldn’t be an unwise call to pursue the Italian midfielder this summer. We can do with a number 10 in our team and that too a player who is still 22 and still years away from entering the peak phase of his career.
His contract impasse with the Rome-based side comes as a boost for us as he would be in the last two years of his current deal come this summer. However, we do need to be wary of Juve, who would be vying to get his signature as they look to bolster their depleted squad.

We have a good crop of players in our midfield for now, but the depth can be pushed to the limit when we seriously want to compete for trophies on all fronts next season. Conte knows Serie A well and if we do end up signing Zaniolo, the ex-Juventus coach may well help him take his career to the next level.
