Steve Hitchen resigns as director of technical performance at Tottenham Hotspur

According to the Tottenham Hotspur website (h/t Football.London), Steve Hitchen has stepped down from his position at Tottenham Hotspur. He served as the director of technical performance at the club since September 2020.

The 45-year-old has been affiliated with Spurs for a while now. He joined the Lilywhites in 2005 in scouting roles before leaving the club for other opportunities in 2010. He then rejoined the North London club in 2017 as chief of scouting and became the director of technical performance in September 2020.

Hitchen has a pretty solid resume, having worked with the likes of Queens Park Rangers, Liverpool and Derby County. The former defender has had his fair share of ups and downs as Tottenham’s chief scout.

While players like Lucas Moura have made an impact from time to time, the likes of Tanguy Ndombele have failed to make an impact. The latter is now on loan at Olympique Lyonnais for the rest of this season.

The North Londoners have found it increasingly difficult to procure the right kind of players on a consistent basis and the managerial changes in these last few years have only added more uncertainty to an already chaotic situation.

What is in store for Steve Hitchen and Tottenham Hotspur?

According to Liverpool Echo, Steve has been increasingly linked to a role at Everton at this moment. The Toffees have struggled to get the right balance of players and a dedicated manager who is willing to get the best out of them in the recent past.

With the Merseysiders sitting in the bottom half of the table and struggling to put results on the board, a man with the capabilities of Hitchen could surely help steer the boat in the right direction.

Fabio Paratici has been a busy man ever since joining the club and has even managed to use his experience in Serie A to craft lucrative deals and bring fresh talent to Tottenham. It remains to be seen how our club will be affected by Hitchen’s departure in that regard, and if we have a replacement in mind.

The North Londoners are currently sitting in seventh position in the Premier League table. While the race for the top four gets heated, Conte has been provided with a fresh boost of incoming players and hopefully, Hitchen’s departure doesn’t have a negative effect on the club’s recruitment drive in the upcoming windows.

The timing is perhaps in Tottenham’s favour considering such a decision during the January window could have added an additional headache for our backroom staff. The club was particularly busy on deadline day and with our deals now done and registered, we can focus on how to deal with this departure.

Ideally, the club would have had an idea about this decision beforehand and already have a plan in place to deal with it. But if the news is sudden for the club as well, then they have to act fast and decisively to make sure our backroom activities keep going without any hiccups.
