Nottingham Forest set to start fresh contract talks with Tottenham Hotspur target Brennan Johnson

According to Evening Standard (h/t The Shields Gazette), Nottingham Forest are expected to open fresh contract talks with Tottenham Hotspur target Brennan Johnson amidst interest from several Premier League clubs. He has attracted lots of attention as a result of his excellent performances in the English second division.

The 20-year-old will see his contract with Forest expire in the summer of 2023. Arsenal and Newcastle United have expressed their interest to sign him alongside Tottenham as a result. All three clubs have been touted to make a £20million transfer to secure his signature in the future.

The Championship club is lining up a contract extension to shut down all these interests as the summer transfer window draws closer. Their actions are certainly warranted as Brentford, West Ham United and Crystal Palace are also monitoring the 20-year-old’s situation.

Potential blow?

Our need for new midfield additions has increased following the three departures we had in the January transfer window. Even if the likes of Dele Alli, Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso have not fared well for us, they offered depth to deal with fatigue, injuries and other issues.

Even if we signed Rodrigo Bentancur last month, the lack of adequate options has been highlighted with the recent injury to Oliver Skipp. Johnson would be a fine addition as he looks ready to take the next step to the English top flight. The Welshman could instil quality and depth while safeguarding our interest for the long term future.

Hence, this update would cause concerns if the negotiation eventually results in a renewal down the line. With ten goals and five assists from 34 matches, it is understandable why the second division club wants to tie down Johnson’s future at City Ground.

Let’s hope that the Reds do not succeed with their plans so we can prise him away in the coming transfer windows. They rejected bids of more than £10million in January, so it remains to be seen if there is a change in stance due to the contract winding down next summer.

However, we must keep an eye on the five other Premier League rivals so as not to repeat our mistakes from January. Only time will give us an answer as to whether Johnson will reach an agreement with Forest or seek a new challenge, hopefully at Spurs.
