Transfer News: Celtic confident to finalise permanent move for Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers

According to transfer insider Dean Jones speaking to GiveMeSport via Transfer Tavern (h/t Football.London), Celtic are optimistic about finalising a permanent transfer for Tottenham Hotspur loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers. He is currently out on loan with the Scottish Premiership side and has been excellent for them throughout this period.

Carter-Vickers joined the Celts at the start of this season on a season-long loan move. They want to buy him permanently in the summer transfer window but will need to deal with competition from several Premier League clubs. That being said, the Scottish side is “hopeful” that they can add him permanently to their squad by pipping their rivals for his signature.

The US international is a sought-after centre-back following his impressive performances this campaign. PL sides such as Leicester City, West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and Watford are keeping tabs on him to make their move at the right time.

Spurs made a mistake?

Ange Postecoglou ’s side has an option in the loan deal to make the 24-year-old’s move permanent for a fee of around £10million in the summer transfer window. As such, they are firmly in the lead to secure the defender’s signature after this term. After all, they simply can trigger the clause and seal a deal for the Spurs loanee.

With hindsight, it seems that the decision to include the buy option has been a mistake from our side in the end. After all, Celtic could sign the impressive defender for a modest fee. But then again, without this clause, there is no guarantee that they would have been willing to pay an 8-figure sum for him.

It remains to be seen if he has a future at N17. After all, we can use a bit of depth at the back especially after losing Toby Alderweireld last summer and Conte’s system which sees three centre-backs play in our backline.

But then again, Spurs would be smart to go for quality over quantity. With the likes of Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga in our defence, whose performances have blown hot and cold over recent months, we would do well to pursue a truly world-class name in defence- if we were to strengthen in that area at all.

It remains to be seen what comes of this deal, but it doesn’t seem like a very bad situation for Spurs to be in. A player that was clearly surplus to requirement at N17 can now bring in a decent sum of money to the club.

With just 5 senior Spurs appearances in his entire career, it remains to be seen if Carter-Vickers can salvage his Tottenham career after a good season in Scotland. But as of now, it seems like the club would be taking the right call if they decide to part ways with him this summer- although Celtic might leave us no choice if they simply choose to meet the buyout clause.
