Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur rival Chelsea to sign Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell

According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur will battle it out with Chelsea to sign Crystal Palace left-back Tyrick Mitchell ahead of the summer transfer window. He is one of the rising stars to come up from the ranks of the youth system and has quickly become a regular for his side this season.

Mitchell recently earned a late call-up to the England national team after Gareth Southgate asked for his services in place of the injured Reece James. He could potentially make his debut as well in this month’s friendlies. The defender is currently happy with his life at Selhurst Park, so it could be difficult to convince him to entertain offers from elsewhere.

Tottenham and the Blues are monitoring the 22-year-old at this moment, but they are not the only interested parties in this transfer race. Manchester City are in the market for a left-back and have been tracking him as a potential target. Newcastle United are also in the fray as they look to build on their resurgence following the takeover.

Should Spurs target Tyrick Mitchell?

The Englishman has been excellent this term, showcasing his defensive skills, making him one of the best in that regard. He leads the Premier League for winning the most one on one defensive duels while being in second place for the most tackles made, trailing Brentford’s Christian Norgaard.

The Eagles’ ace is a great prospect defensively, but he still has some ways to go before being a solid option in terms of his offensive ability. As such, we should only pursue him if the club is sure that he would suit the right profile and if Antonio Conte believes he can improve the defender.

After all, bringing in the wrong profile would be wasteful on our part, which is especially evident from the struggles Emerson Royal has suffered this term. He has failed to express the qualities he had shown at Real Betis, and it is baffling to see how poor he has been in the attacking department.

Conte is well known for using his wingbacks in a way that they have greater influence in the attack. After all, Achraf Hakimi became one of the best right-wingbacks in world football under the Spurs boss during their time together at Inter Milan.

We have Ryan Sessegnon and Sergio Reguilon in our ranks on the left-hand side of the defence. Both of them have fared well so far, but there are some concerns about their future. Sessegnon, for example, has struggled with his fitness, whereas Reguilon could be prised away by Real Madrid this summer due to the presence of a release clause worth around £43million.

We may potentially require an addition in that position but whether that will be Mitchell or not remains to be seen. Patrick Vieira’s side could make life difficult for us as they are known for being stubborn during negotiations. Then again, we may not need to go down that route anyway if Conte does not approve of his transfer.
